Thought it'd be fun to see what the "average" gamer looked like in 2017. The survey will run until 1/13/18 and results will be posted the following day or so. I'll plan on running this every year to see how the average gamer evolves.

Had to guess on a lot of those, particularly plays, as I don't track that.

I realized I can use Date Added in collection and sort by that to see games purchased in 2017. 35 games bought (48 including expansions). More than I thought. Most bought since October (Essen crop).

I am not dissimilar

I was amused by the disparity between the spread on Number of games owned & Number of unique games played. I'd have had the spread as very similar, if not identical

Yeah, I think the cut-off for different games played and unique plays are both too low for a lot of the BGG population.

I also have another suggestion for next time: Why not offer an option for "other" in the question about gender?
There maybe aren't that many people who do not identify as either male or female, but they exist, so why not provide that option?

I had other in my original post but I screwed up a number of questions so redid it. I unintentionally left it out in the updated one. I'll be sure to have it next year.

Looks like way underestimated the games owned/played. I'll have to make adjustments next year.

This poll is going to self-select the obsessive BGG trackers only. I barely know how to look up a lot of this information even if I wanted to take the time to. And then tracking where I buy and how many at what kind of site......ugh.

Doesn't have to be 100% accurate. I myself don't track everything. More of a guesstimate.

Couldn't answer 7-9 as I don't track that kind of thing.

Also off the chart on most of the questions.

Question 11 didn't have an answer for, don't feel like I didn't get enough gaming in. Passed up plenty of gaming nights because I felt I had played plenty that week.

He means how many different games you played. So if you played 50 games of Catan and 20 games of Carcassone you would put 2 instead of 70.

Of course that would require someone to have play Catan 50 times yet somehow retained the will to live...

I it is so that you do NOT count expansions to a game as another game. So if you played Memoir44 35 times using all off the expansions at varying times, it still counts as 35 plays of ONE game.

I think!

For the money-based questions, I imagine most respondents won’t actually be from the US.

Might be a good idea in future to turn purchase habit questions into a percentage rather than a dollar figure, e.g. how many weeks’ worth of wages did you spend on new games? What was the ratio of FLGS to OLGS?
You may be interested to see the average household income, but those results are going to be pretty false unless everyone uses a currency converter to give the amount in US dollars.

The cost of living changes , income and taxes change greatly between various places. I would earn 2X and pay less taxes in the states (though medical bills would be brutal).

Not to mention that in some places board games may cost a lot (Brazil).

These won't be false but they would be pretty useless.

I bought a bunch of games at the oulet sale of the Dutch biggest publisher (they sell directly frommtheir warehouse twice a year) and at a gaming convention. I didn’t count those as either FLGS nor FOGS, so bought a lot more than the numbers in those questions.

Some ranges are weird to me... new games goes up to 60+, but different games only to 70+?
I hope most people get to play a lot more different games than they buy in one year. I bought/was gifted maybe fourty new games, while I played 300 different ones.

Number of plays at 200+ is also very low to me, I didn’t do an exact count this year (can’t take it straight from BGG as expansion plays count double then), but it’s somewhere between 500 and 1000, and I know I am not extreme for BGG standards.

Some questions I couldn’t answer, either because I don’t know the count (how many did I get for gifts... a bunch... easier to answer the ones I can get straight from BGG.., e.g. i own 499 games, just stayed below the highest category there) or because there was not the right option (why did I not play enough games? Call me weird, but I DID play enough games, if I wanted to I could play more, but I do other things too in my life and already play a lot of games)
