The subject head says it all. What is the lightest and the heaviest game in your top 12 games? (EDIT: In other words, you’re picking 2 games from within your top 12 games, the lightest of those 12 and the heaviest of those 12.) Why '12' and not '10'? Because everyone else does 10 and I'm a special snowflake! What not heaviest or lightest overall? Because I wanted to zero in on your favorite games, not just point to that copy of Case Blue that you never actual play but bought for street cred so you wouldn't get a cap popped in your posterior by those hooligans playing 1817 in your local broken-glass strewn playground.

My lightest favorite game is Innovation (2.71). I've had so much fun playing this heads up with the wife. It's a mediocre 4 player game but a gem at 2. Super nasty tactical puzzlefest.

My heaviest favorite game is The Gallerist (4.27). It's the combination of a complicated set of choices and a charming theme. The wife and I have been getting better at this baby, our brains don't hurt so much when we play it now.

In general, I tend to prefer medium to medium heavy games (Agricola, Spirit Island, Concordia), with plenty of exceptions, of course (Above and Below, City of Spies, Mechs vs. Minions). I don't mind randomness but I want my choices to matter. I'll tolerate the occasional party game with friends but I'm doing that because friends, not because games.

Re: What are your heaviest and lightest top 12 games?
Falling Sky just takes it at 3.95, though apparently A Feast for Odin, comes second (3.87) because presumably adding a spatial element makes it more complex than the rest of the COIN series (A Distant Plain 3.75) or something that's actually mentally taxing like Churchill (3.24). The lightest one is Assault on Doomrock (3.12).

So I usually prefer games that demonstrate the problems with a crowd sourced complexity rating

My favorite lightest is Nuclear War (1.45)

Also, my all time favorite.

My favorite heaviest (according to BGG is Wildcatters (3.80)

I prefer mid weight euros, with an occasional 'heavy' euro. Personally I feel that Container, but BBG has this, Imperial and Russian Railroads? as heavier.

Tigris & Euphrates at 3.53
Flamme Rouge at 1.85

My preferences skew lighter overall; there are only a few here and there that are medium-heavy.

Re: What are your heaviest and lightest top 12 games?
Kingdom Death: Monster tops out just over 4.
No Thanks! just over 1.

A few comments on that though. While KDM is very rules heavy, it certainly isn't the most difficult thing. I'd say, strategy wise, my heaviest games are more in the 3-3.5 range. I tend to skew in the 2-3 range but enjoy a lot of light filler card games ( which no thanks is standing in for since I don't keep a specific top 10-12.

1.20 to 4.27

That is quite a range. Love letter is one of my absolute favorite games. The gallerist isn't loved to nearly the same level, but it is still a fantastic game.

Re: What are your heaviest and lightest top 12 games?
Like Mark, my lightest is also Flamme Rouge at 1.85. Although I would consider it more like 2.5 weight as I prefer to play it, with multi-stage tours and trying out various other mods.

My heaviest is technically A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition) at 3.66, but this is where BGG weight ratings show how inaccurate they are for me. I would consider 2 of my other favorites as heavier. Agricola at 3.63 is at least a bit heavier than AGoT. And I consider Maria at 3.49 as heavier than both of these. Lisboa, the only La Cerda game I've played, is rated at 4.44, but I don't consider it much heavier than Agricola. I'm just learning Pendragon: The Fall of Roman Britain and if it hits my top 12 as I hope, then I think I will very likely consider it my heaviest top 12, even though its current weight is only 3.25.

Mike, Wildcatters is great! I can see it rising higher in my ratings with more plays, although it will be hard to get into my top 12. But I would consider it lower weight than 3.80.

For me, BGG weight is not a meaningful indicator for how much I'll like a game (well, maybe a game with <1.5 I know will be too light for my tastes). Games that I would put at <2 or >4 weight are unlikely to reach me top 12, but that's kind of self-fulfilling as I calibrate what I consider in that 2-4 ranges as my personal sweet spot of rules and game play complexity. If the rules are too complex for me to enjoy it, that's why I would consider it at a >4 weight; conversely, if the game is too light for me to really love it and crave the next chance to play it, then I consider it at a <2 weight.

Through the Ages at 4.35 is the heaviest game in my top 12. Mage Knight close behind at 4.23.

Dice Masters at 2.29 is my lightest game.

Love all sorts of games, but my favorites tend to lean more to medium/heavy.

Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization is 4.17

Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is 4.35

Which is weird, because TTA: A new story is supposed to be an easier and more streamlined version of TTA.

Wonder why that is?

Heaviest favorite: Lisboa (4.44)
Lightest favorite: Five Tribes (2.90)

The lightest games that could be ranked among my extended favorites are Patchwork (1.70) and Santorini (1.78), both of which would probably make my current TOP 25.

Heaviest is apparently Lisboa at 4.44 (seems too high, in particular should be lower than Kanban, which is at 4.31)

Lightest is Railroad Revolution at 3.16 (which feels just a bit too low to me)

Overall eight of my twelve are in that 3.5-4 range, Railroad Revolution is the only one below it, and so I have three above 4.

If you expand out to the top 25 or so I have some lighter games though, both Council of Four and Gold West are excellent games with weights hovering just above 2.5. And if we expand out that far the top end goes up a bit as well, with Arkwright at my number 14 game with a weight of 4.53.

I guess the point is though that overall my tastes are somewhat narrow.

Because different people with different expectations are trying and rating it. That's also the only reason I can think of that Gallerist has a weight rating of 4.26, probably people not used to heavier euros tried it because of the components and got overwhelmed. For TTA it's got to be all of the people who always saw it so highly ranked, and heard that there was a new improved more streamlined version and so finally decided to try it.
