Yes, this is really cool news. That whole series was great, and it's nice to see them "back in the fold" as it were. Now I'm just imagining all kinds of modernized high quality components for them.

I went online and read the relevant Code (17 U.S. Code § 203) that seems to be the one that would have been activated. It won't be as simple as just re-printing the old game books and counters -- Steve Jackson re-acquired the rights to the game, but most likely none of the artworks or implementations of them.

But, it's step one in the right direction, and having the legal right to do something is the first major hurdle.

I understand he didn't gain rights to the art but what does not having the rights to the original "implementations" mean? Would he be forced to do a complete "re-skin" of physical game concepts, similar to how Avalon Hill's Dune was converted to Rex?

In general, as much fun as we had with Melee/Wizard back in the day, I wonder is there enough of a modern Microgames market to make it worth the effort of redevelopment, vs simple reprints of the original pocket editions as with Ogre?

Just spitballing but (if he'd gotten reprint rights for the originals as with Ogre) releasing "classic collector editions" could be a KS fund source for an eventual app? Being able to play Melee/Wizard with/against others online on my phone would be fun.

By "implementation" I mean mainly the rule book page layouts and such. The actual words are his, and the ideas, but not the final look of the booklet or counters. Whether there is enough interest to do a new version remains to be seen, but the idea is certainly appealing.

If I have anything to say about it, there is enough interest! I know about half a dozen dudes who are all going to be stoked for the return of The Fantasy Trip.

Art? Let's see, my copy of Melee has ilustrations and cover by Liz Danforth. I'm pretty sure SJG and Liz Danforth can come to an agreement about either using the old art or redoing it...

Didn’t Ogre and G.E.V. have to overcome the same hurdles?

Does anyone know if Pat Hidy is still with us?
If so, maybe a KS to commission new art work...

My cousin and I used to spend entire vacations playing TFT whenever our families got together. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with this.

Much as I liked TFT back in the day, what I loved was the basic Melee/Wizard set and the micro quests.

I love the streamlined implementation that was done by Dark City Games for their set of self-contained modules, and if there is a new TFT that is similarly rules light and action ready I’d be all over it.

Hoping for the deluxe treatment with big, colorful map sheets, plastic minis and a HUGE box. Deluxified!

And maybe some better rules for experience, so the higher powered characters are not quite so overpowered.

Mr. Jackson has made a post about Dark City Games on the SJG forum related to this. It looks promising there, too.

Pretty happy to hear this at long last! TFT was my cadre's go-to game in middle and high school.

We did switch to Car Wars at university tho...

I even wrote a full "Death Test 1.5" micro-adventure (still have the three ring binder, all hand written and drawn...) (different in that it required a DM to do tricky room reveals)

Maybe I should type it up and see if SJ is looking for a fresh 'test...

Fantastic news, a little ray of sunshine in what otherwise has been a rather grim month for me. Looking forward to whatever he has planned, and so far it sounds good.

Here's a little more clarification on things from Steve on the SJG forum:

Great News. I already have the Mini Games, and Advanced rules etc - But it'd be nice to see this made readily available to a new audience.

I played more Melee and Wizard than any other game over the course of my lifetime.

And I love TFT for short campaigns and one-off role-playing sessions.

This is exciting news, although I don't know that I will need to own the new stuff unless there is some added value. I already have multiple copies of everything.
