Hello,

I am looking for two-player game recommendations. The game should be (rather) easy to learn, not depend too heavily on luck, it should not require too much interaction/fiddling with game material (e.g. unlike Agricola or Castles of Burgundy, which I did not enjoy due to this reason), and also the game concept should not be too shallow.

Games that I like include:
- Catan (for two players in particular the "Intimate Settlers" variant),
- Ticket to ride,
- Scrabble,
- Rummikub,
- Carcassonne,
- Village,
- Labyrinth,
- Werewolves.

Moreover, I like the game concept of Dominion, but I find the shuffling and constant dealing of cards a bit tedious (in my opinion this dominates the entire game). Also, I remember that I did not enjoy Pandemic and Kingdom Builder very much.

Thanks for your input!

Hi there,

I also did not like Agricola or Burgundy and I would recommend Splendor or Patchwork for 2 player games with a lot of depth for their time slot. Both also have few moving parts and those that do move are quite satisfying in both.

If you are into more heavy competitive games my partner and I really enjoy Twilight Struggle, but it is rather heavy and long compared to those you listed.

Hope these are useful!

I want to recommend a few more great two-player-games:

Kahuna or Noxford
If you like to play games without mercy. Seriously, they can be cut-throat. Kahuna is for 2 players, Noxford 2 to 4.

Dragon's Heart
If you want something fast, that goes after a few plays without thinking. This is our typical last game of the evening. But usually we will still play it 3, 4, 5 times in a row.

And, if you are ok with two player dexterity:
Polarity (But this might be hard to get.)

+1 for

7 Wonders Duel – imho amazingly good.
Jaipur – much simpler than 7 Wonders, but also very fun

There is a "Settler of Catan" Card Game version for two persons. The setup takes several minutes. I like it more than the original "settlers" board game:

I will echo 7 wonders duel, but also wanted to recommend castles of burgundy. This is a great game for two players. There are a lot of pieces, so i invested in a box under which makes it so much quicker for setting the game up to play and therefore most of the time is actually spent playing the game.

Thanks a lot for so many recommendations. In fact, I am now a bit overwhelmed with choosing the right ones among all your suggestions. Thanks to Firefrost we recently got Twilight Struggle (which we enjoy a lot) and now we are looking for a more lightweight competitive strategy game that does not take that long (say < 1 hour), has great replayability, does not depend heavily on luck, does not require too much fiddling with game items, and works well with 2 persons. The game theme is not so important, but preferably it should not be scifi. Which among the already mentioned ones would fit here?

I see that many of you suggest 7 Wonders Duel, but my first impression from what I saw is that the game material does not look very appealing to me. Am I the only one who perceives it this way?

This was indeed a great recommendation, thanks for this! Within the last two weeks we played it around 10 times and we find it to be quite addictive.

While we already own the Catan card game, we still prefer the board game version using the "Intimate Settlers" variant.

If you don't think 7WD doesn't look good to you, skip it and get something else. It'll be there later if you change your mind.

I am kind of surprised you are enjoying TS based on your original post, but good for you.

For something under an hour that has already been mentioned: Patchwork.

You might want to check out 13 Days: The Cuban Missile Crisis, which is a lightweight, 45-minute "version" of Twilight Struggle.

Otherwise, my favourites for 2-player shorter games with high replayability:
Star Realms
Patchwork
Summoner Wars: Master Set
Arboretum
7 Wonders Duel (in my opinion, the material looks good enough)
