Rules say that should not one place a worker on the Great Mogul space the elephant advances to the next player. Surely this make the space sort of redundant in a 2 player game unless you are the first player and you want to hold on to it? I suppose you do get 2 fame points but is it really that useful?

Depends on the situation obviously, but in our 2 player games it has proven useful on occasion.

It's not redundant at all in 2 player games.
Once someone developed markets to a certain value (which can be blocked by opponent anyway) or can activate two mango villages again (using expansion obviously) the Great Mogul becomes quite important in 2 player games.

If the first player can use it to hold his advantage, the second player must think about using it himself just to avoid this (even if he would become starting player if noone chooses the place).
Also getting those 2 points might be the only way to activate a new worker this round.

In our last 2-player game, that space won the game for one of us at the end. It is incredibly important in many situations. Plus, the 2 fame are really, really good. Worth 4 money, to be exact. But mostly it is useful to get the market you need, or to block your opponent from getting a market space he needs.
