About time

Quote:
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), the longest-serving GOP senator in U.S. history, announced Tuesday that he'll retire at the end of his term — a decision that could clear the path for Mitt Romney to replace him in the Senate.

Especially given this exchange

Quote:
On Thursday evening, as the Senate debated the Republican tax plan, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) asked whether there’s “something we can do to get the children’s health insurance program done.”

Hatch’s response, in a nutshell: Yes, we’ll fund the program, but we’re really short on money.

“We’re going to do CHIP; there’s no question about it in my mind. And it’s got to be done the right way,” Hatch said. “But the reason CHIP’s having trouble is because we don’t have money anymore, and to just add more and more spending and more and more spending, and you can look at the rest of the bill for the more and more spending.”

This came as he advocated for a tax bill that, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation’s latest estimate, will add approximately $1 trillion to the deficit even when adjusted for economic growth, and which disproportionately benefits corporations and the wealthy.

One only hopes some more of his side of the aisle decide to join him. When you choose enriching the wealthy over protecting the most vulnerable its time to quit.

Not sure Romney would want the job? After being the presidential candidate, and wealthy in his own right, Senator would be a step down. Laughs, heck, he might run in 2020 for President, although that pic with him eating dinner with Trump will not help his cause. I always questioned his wisdom in sitting down for that photo op, where Trump is smiling like he knows he now has Romney in his back pocket.

Now THAT is interesting. Will he fall into line with McConnell bat house now aided by Trump or will he be pragmatic and actually stand up for some sensibility.

Anyone expecting the GOP in congress to stand up to The Donald is just asking for heartbreak

Agreed, Hatch will be a Trump tool until his last day in office.

Hatch ran in '76 by complaining that the incumbent had been there too long.

18 years.

I despise Orrin Hatch.

Romney absolutely wants the job, so get ready to have a rock-solid constant supporter of Trump replaced with a rock-solid constant supporter of Trump who occasionally makes meaningless noises about civility

One can always hope that Bannon's political idiocy combined with The Donald's reputation for carrying a grudge will prompt some monumental stupidity on their part.

And an announcement seems to be on its way regarding this situation

Quote:
"The former Republican 2012 presidential nominee, 70, changed his location from Massachusetts -- where he served as governor from 2003 to 2007 -- to Holladay, Utah, where he owns a home.

The change in location, which may appear seemingly benign, comes as speculation swirls that Romney may be interested in filling Republican Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch's Senate seat."
