I've noticed a blue symbol in the box for the encounter card name, but I didn't notice that in the 1.0 version of the game. What does this symbol denote?

If you mean the small portcullis, it's used when mixing sets together. It's on half the cards.

Mixing sets to create a 4player game? Or using the base game and expansion?

It's for mixing with the expansion. Half the cards in the base game have it and half the cards in the expansion have it, well actually the expansion has a little leaf I believe next to the cards you are supposed to mix with the base game. Then you combine that to make a full size deck per the rules. Haven't tried it yet, but excited to try it.

Edited to hopefully clarify.
