If you're unfamiliar with the history and geography of the game, I highly recommend reading Peter Hopkirk's terrific overview, The Great Game.

ps And if you get into it, it is just the first book of a trilogy on the topic!

Absolutely! I'm re-reading it and enjoying it just as much this time.

I would also recommend Byron Farwell's Queen Victoria's Little Wars. Although it will take you further afield than central Asia, the chapters on this theater are also very good. It is, of course, much more Anglo-centric.

Although they are novels I cannot recommend Flashman and Flashman in the Great Game enough. The fact that I saw there is a 'Flashman' counter is what pushed me off the fence to buy this game (and the fact it's a CDG).

They are very entertaining and really bring the central historical figures to life and respect the history.
