I know going into this game with a plan is not the greatest idea in the world ;) But I want to give combat, which I've largely ignored, a try. So what ships, loadouts and strategy should an aspiring space pirate prioritise?

Swamp Rat- Occam's Razor- Slow Leak. That'll give you 3 D20 missile shots...

Experiment with piercers and RK5 blasters (if you have the expansion with Sellsword).

And for the rules lawyers, yes, I know there are penalties to the 3D 20 missiles...

Are piercers worth using on missiles as well?

I tried a RK5-Blaster/Piercer strategy in my latest game last week and killed the Scoundrel with one shot. Okay, I rolled well and he didn't, but it was a good feeling to be able to use a blaster to it's full potential once in a while.

Are piercers worth using on missiles as well?


They're SO cheap that they're probably worth using on almost anything. 1000k is pocket change for what you get - d6 blaster plus a piercer costs the same as a d8 blaster but will easily get through the kinds of shields you're likely to see early. I think the one exception is that the d20 missile is probably a better deal than d12 missile + piercer, assuming you can fit it on your ship.

Swamp Rat
Starting 4k Cr Builds:

BFG Version
Tier 3 missile
Tier 1 Engine
- Slow but can throw out 2d20-2 damage which can one shot any ship in the game

Double Shot Version
2x Tier 1 missle
Tier 2 engine OR Tier 1 engine with GTS
- better movement than BFG (d8 or d6+2)
- Can throw 3d8-2 which can again one shot any ship

Upgrade Tier 2 to Krembler with regen ability
Can remove damage caused by Swamp Rat overcharge ability
Make sure to pick up cargo pods!

Tier 3
Constant Sorrow works well and is my go to, but depending on play style just about any tier 3 ship works, as long as you can fit a Tier 3 missile on board.

Yes. Oh Yes. Worth their weight in gold.

You only have limited opportunities to lay out damage, and the ability to maximize your opportunity can not be overstated.

Cheers for the detailed response, definitely going to give this a go on Sunday when we play again. Hopefully I roll high/no-one snags the Swamp Rat. Torn on the malicious joy of rolling 2d20 vs 3d8.

Remember any damage to an outfit causes -1 to each dice rolled with that outfit.

So if you roll a d20, then add a damage its a -1 to each dice (hence 2d20-2)

Honestly I struggle in early game with the BFG just because lack of movement. 3d8-2 gives a more consistent damage and has more movement.
(but spinning the hate cannon up for 2d20 damage just feels awesome )
