The bonus cards are fun, but introduce lots of luck and chaos in an otherwise very ordered game.

Here's a variant for a slightly more strategic and controlled way to use the bonus cards.

Before the game starts, perform a bonus card draft phase:

* Draw five bonus cads from the deck and lay them out face-up in front of both players.
* First player takes one bonus card.
* Second player takes two bonus cards out of the remaining four.
* First player takes one bonus card out of the remaining two.
* The last remaining bonus card is put back in the box.

Now do another bonus card draft phase, but with the players flipped: draw five bonus cards, second player takes one, first player takes two, second player takes one. (Put the remaining one card back into the box too.)

Both players should have four bonus cards in front of them now. Keep them face-up and not hidden during the game.

Play the game as normal otherwise, but don't draw new bonus cards when any of your four initial bonuses are fulfilled. Instead, if at any time during the game both players have fulfilled all four of their bonuses, then immediately do the bonus card draft phases so that both players have four bonus cards again.

Enjoy.
