Due to one of the things that can happen in Interlude II of the Path to Carcosa

Spoiler (click to reveal)
For the remainder of the campaign, any time an investigator speaks the name of HASTUR aloud during a scenario (or during the setup of a scenario), that investigator must immediately take 1 horror.

I asked the designer how instant horror works with ongoing effects like Fight or Flight.

Quote:
Until the end of the round, you get +X Combat and +X Agility, where X is the amount of horror on you.

That X will change as your horror changes during the round. From Matt:

Matt Newman wrote:
When you play Fight or Flight, it creates a lasting effect (RR page 14) which continues to affect the game state until its duration expires. That effect will continue to alter the game state based on its particular conditions and parameters and update if necessary. In this case, this means that the bonus granted to your Combat and Agility from Fight or Flight will continue to increase and decrease as the amount of horror on you increases and decreases, until the effect expires.

Spoiler scenario of how this would work below:

Spoiler (click to reveal)
So let's say I'm Yorick with 1 horror and during the game, saying "Hastur" gives me another horror. I am engaged with a Swift Byakhee (evade 2). I had already played Fight or Flight during the turn, so my evade is at a 4 now (3 base skill, +1 for 1 horror).

I have no cards in hand, so I say "Hastur" once, giving me another horror instantly. Before I do anything else on my turn, that means my evade is now 5 (3 base skill, +2 for 2 horror.)

I do my evade check, which is now my 5 against it's 2. Decent odds, but I manage to pull a -4 token out of the bag. I then say Hastur again between Skill Test Timing ST4 and ST5, giving me one more horror, meaning Fight or Flight is now boosting me to the necessary 6 (3 base skill, +3 for 3 horror) so my evade is successful.

So whenever you need a horror, for basically any reason, just call your good buddy Hastur and go a little crazy!

I know, but it's why I checked with Matt.

yeah... I have to say this was one of the story turns I was not a fan of. Seems kind of like a dumb gimmick. 4th wall breaking, and vulnerable to exploit (agnes). I hate this.

Yeah, it’s a silly beer-and-pretzels rule, but I figure you can just ignore it if you want to.

Ha, I thought it was a really cool idea. I like this too.
It is like you are invoking his name for more power... what a cool story concept.
