Wes Erni has turned his Eye of Sauron back to Death in the Trenches, and we will be having an all-day strategy meeting next weekend to go over the revisions that (mostly) he has brought to the forthcoming second edition of the game.

We're still committed to the summer 2018 plan to submit the game to Compass. Barring unforeseen calamities, the game is already green-lit once we actually have a game to submit.

For players of the original game, the new game is essentially the same (with entirely new artwork) but with a couple of major, far-reaching changes. Most importantly, the "DivMax" system has been stripped down and simplified. It's still recognizably of the same family but there is less math involved. Secondly, the combat system has also been radically simplified. There are now fewer dice in each battle (still handfuls of dice, but smaller handfuls!).

A crowdsourcing question for you all: In the original game we had special event "coins" (you literally used your own coins, as we didn't have enough markers!) on off-map displays to show the availability of special features like elite commanders and technology such as flamethrowers and tanks. Now that we have enough markers, we're trying to decide what to call these markers. "Assets" makes sense but doesn't have a WWI-ish sound to it. I'm open to suggestions as to what to call them!

Resource markers? GNP (gross national product) markers? Any idea of the price point for this new release? I need to start setting aside my own GNPs

How about "Logistics" markers, though "assets" is probably fine.

Or maybe for a more WWI Home Office sound, how about "allocations" markers.

"Allocations" sounds just cruel and impersonal enough to suit my needs! Allocations it is! Thanks.

Will the map re-orient so that it is more European-like?

Very excited about this. Is it suitable for multiplayer? I'm hoping to teach a game-based course on WWI next fall, and I'm wondering if this might be something we can use.

Many of Ben´s games are not really multiplayer friendly, this is because of the pulse system. We failed with a 5-player Absolute Victory as often the Japanese player was just watching for hours. Better to have a go with 2.

Ben,

How about this WW1 German Trench slang for the coins(Zinwaren)...its a WW1 German slang for medals but translates to tinware.

hey you can also names them PBIs(Poor bloody Infantry) which also referred to the heavy kits they have to wear to the front. (aka. Something to hang things from).
