Howdy - Played two games of Dinosaur Island last night and had a blast. We played with 4 players, one medium game and one short game. It seemed to us as having a bunch of large carnivores was the best strategy (taking one first round and only building those types of dinos). Can anyone lend some advice on ways to retaliate this strategy, or other ones that can be better implemented? Thank you!

Well off the top of my head, I would say be sure not to take any dice with 3 “pips” on them in the Research Phase. Force them to, they will get less DNA each round to keep building their dino’s - OR - their carnivores will start eating their patrons...

Funny to read this as I just read on another thread that the game was broken because herbivores were obviously the best, haha. Glad to hear people are concerned about both ends, probably means the game is fairly balanced.

I won a game with building a bunch of T-Rex. The next game I won with stegosaurus and ankylosaurus. I think if you're going herbivore or small carnivore, you should 100% avoid building any of your basic on board dinos. Food stands are a great way to combat the financial boost of that 3 excitement. Also, if you go herbs, you won't need as much security so you can focus your phase 2 and 3 more on DNA, Capacity, and VP Specialists.

Lastly, if you notice your opponent going for the big boys, rush the end. The longer they have the large dinos that you don't, the larger that advantage rolls. see if you can pick off the objectives early.

Yes, I recently had the same issue on my 2nd game. One of the players hit the front early then kept his lead (and extended it) by constantly putting his #3 scientist on the large carnivore spot in his first Phase 2 move and then building them, making his VPs extend further and further away from us. I thought we must have been doing something wrong. Since he always had the most VPs no one could ever remove him from the first player spot.

Do you score the VPs for the dinosaurs when you build them, or not till the very end of the game?

The VPs printed on the recipe do not get scored until the end of the game.

You were doing something wrong. The player who has the fewest VPs becomes the new first player.

Good catch. I didn't even notice that. You're absolutely right.
