The Colt Express base game includes this somewhat confusing 2-player mode without a Gunslinger award that forces you to use the Expert Variant. It really doesn't give you any mobility since you play with two half-decks, and it raises the weird question of if Ghost is allowed to play his partner's card face-down or not.

To me, it makes way more sense to just play as a team of two Bandits. The Horses & Stagecoach rules contain a description for team mode (which I won't write out here) that contains a cool rule where you draw your first card from your partner's deck that you can check out if you want, but here's the simpler version you'd use with the base set or Horses & Stagecoach.

Treat set-up as if it were a 4-player game (Cars, Rounds, Hostages, etc.)
Place one of each player's Bandits (Player A) in the caboose, and one of each player's Bandits (Player B) in the second to last Car. (Or use the Horse Attack if using Horses & Stagecoach.)
The first player's Player A goes first, followed by the second player's Player A, then the first player's Player B, and finally the second player's Player B.
Whoever goes first on each round progresses as usual.
The Gunslinger award goes to the TEAM that shot the most Bullets, not including Bullets you shot your teammate with. (Thanks, Belle!)
All other loot is tallied separately, then added together to obtain a total score for each team. (This means that the hostages of the Banker, the Old Lady, the Poker Player, and the Photographer all only count for the Bandit who got them, not for the team. The Photographer doesn't count your ally's Bullets, and you may want to consider changing the Banker to still be worth $1000 even if it's your partner who owns the Strongbox.)
Richest team wins!

Horses & Stagecoach is recommended for a game with two teams of 3 Bandits or three teams of 2 Bandits so that way you can start more spread out.
Obviously, Marshall & Prisoners can't really be played this way, since the Marshall can't be on a team. Mei, however, can be used.

Admittedly, it may be a bit difficult to keep track of two decks at once, but hey, if you're playing Colt Express with only 2 players, it's because you probably already love the game and are willing to deal with hassle of cleaning it up handling two decks at once.

This is the reason the new AI character packs will be interesting. Can play a 2 player game and have more bandits running around!
