As basic of a game Catan is, it admittedly has a good amount of player interaction and some level of strategy. However, it is just a bit too random. Are there any great 5 player games that have a lot of player activity and strategy?

We're currently looking into Sidereal Confluence and Fief, but are hoping for more options. As for game mechanics, any are welcome aside from party games and fillers. Thanks in advance!

A couple of games you may want to look at for great strategy for 5 players are Puerto Rico and Caylus.

I'd also recommend Lewis & Clark and Terra Mystica.

Twilight Imperium (Fourth Edition)

That’s a bit overboard though.

I would recommend Terra Mystica, as previously recommended.

Another 5 player game I would recommend is Cyclades.
A very fun game with lots of player interaction.
Adding the expansions only makes it better!

Warrior Knights, with the somewhat rare expansion Warrior Knights: Crown and Glory, is another very fun 6 player game with lots of player interaction I would highly recommend. It is a somewhat long game though.

Good luck in your search!

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition)

Interaction, betrayal, strategery, and a great theme.

+1 for Terra Mystica, which is best at 5 (experienced) players.
+1 for Hansa Teutonica, which entices players to get in each others' faces, yet is still a eurogame - not a battle game.

Also look at El Grande or Royals, which are area majority games that require player interaction.

Consider Antike II, which has an easy-to-use rondel mechanism, but includes different strategic options to pursue.

And if you like the simple but effective rondel mechanism, look at Navegador. Player interaction is not too direct, but the competition does feel tense and thematic.

Do you want the same level of complexity as Catan, or something more complex?

Do you want direct interaction, i.e attacking? Or indirect interaction, i.e. trading, blocking, timing, etc.?

+1 for Dominant Species, Cyclades and A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition), and I'd like to add Imperial or Imperial 2030, Food Chain Magnate and Shogun.

On the other hand, even if it's a game I really like, I wouldn't define Terra Mystica as a game with great player interaction at all. It's a multiplayer puzzle in which you develop a long-term plan to maximize your scoring taking into account where your neighbors place (and are going to place) their buildings. I wouldn't call "adapting to the board state after my opponents' turns" player interaction, but I understand that every player has a different point of view in this particular issue.

Tammany Hall but I wouldn't play it if your group has people in it who have hard feelings about games and carry them into actual life.

I second Hansa Teutonica and Dominant Species.

I also recommend Rococo.

Something more complex for sure. Any and all interactions are welcome, we'd love to diversify our collection!

Lifeboats - No randomness, everything is diplomacy between players.

Council of Blackthorn - Another back-stabby court intrigue game, but not overly cliche and has the fun treason mechanic where the player to get the most doesn't score any points at the end.

Viral - Area control in the body with a bit of deck building and a whole lotta messin' with each other.

Wrath of Dragons - Play as dragons terrorizing old Europe. You don't attack each other, but it is about outmaneuvering and out-dragoning your opponents. Or you can play co-op to see how completely you can devastate the land together.

Olympos is one of the best choices for five players. It also plays very quick. Once put on the table we play at least two consecutive games. You should also get the expansion for this one, because it ads a lot to the game.

Dominant Species seconded. Heavy, intense, and best with 5-6 players.

Also Power Grid really shines at 5-6, plenty of conflict there also.

Plenty of great recommendations. Mistborn: House War also works better the more people you have involved. It is a great game that is both cooperative and competitive, has lots of negotiation and sabotage, and is real fun.

Terra Mystica probably the best option...

Kemet and Cyclades are GREAT and A LOT OF FUN!

I am gonna go into Tom Vasel Mode and say Dune "GREAT, GREAT game... but yeah... it's out of print" he does that too often laugh

That said Dune is great and the more players the better, there is a "Remake" of sorts in Rex: Final Days of an Empire (not sure if it's out of print or not, and haven't tried it myself cause I like the Dune universe better).

That said there are some unofficial Dune P&P files out there (might be too much work though).

Cheers

Interaction is such a subjective term, so I'm just going to list games that I enjoy at 5 player.

First, I want to reiterate that El Grande and Terra Mystica should be looked at very hard.

Then a few that haven't been mentioned (at least that I saw):

In the Year of the Dragon
The Princes of Florence
Railways of the World (with Europe map for tighter game)
Concordia (pretty sure this goes on every recommendation...)
Endeavor (new edition coming soon)
Modern Art (not my fave, but an all-time classic)
Shogun
