The 2018 MBG Boardgames Auction. Manchester. UK 3rd March 2018
As per our regular practice, the MBG Auction is on the first Saturday in March … but please NOTE: MAJOR CHANGES for 2018 … new venue, and max 8 lots per seller.
New Venue: Ivy church Didsbury (Known locally as Ivy Cottage Evangelical church). M20 2GP
This location is easy to find, and there is plenty of parking on nearby residential streets.
(more detail below)
Our 2018 Auction is strictly limited to 320 lots, and initial limit is 8 lots per seller attending, on first come first served basis. (I will keep a reserve for late sign-ups of 4 lots / seller.)
We will do PRE-REGISTRATION again for 2018. This requires significant labour for the organisers, but hugely helps the smooth running of the auction.
Please re-read the text below ... it is based on experience and good practice ... we have run an annual auction for about 30 years, so there is considered thought behind every option we take.
DATE: Sat 3rd of March 2018.
Strict maximum of 320 lots for the auction (the aim is to finish by 5:15 p.m.).
Key points: 11:30am start time + Max. 8 lots per seller.
Once again we require sellers to register in advance. We accept board wargames, eurogames, and other boardgames, for auction.
Sellers: please email firstname.lastname@example.org to inform us that you wish to sell, and how many items you expect to sell (up to a maximum of 8). We will add you to the list of sellers, and send you a registration form.
NOTE: you can put multiple items in a single lot ... it helps if they are "related" e.g. Dominion and an expansion, or WW2 board wargames. We strongly recommend a low start price of £1 per lot, we find this generates early interest, and helps things run smoothly … but if you can’t bear the risk of your lot selling at this price, then you can set a higher start price. We do not offer hidden reserve prices.
We will post periodic updates on this Boardgamegeek forum ... this will show the running total of the lots. When this total reaches 320 the registration process will end.
Completed forms need to be returned to the gmail address by midnight Sat. 10/2/18.
NB with the new venue we will not have a shortage of chairs (unlike the Romiley scout hut), but you are welcome to bring a cushion if you wish!
New Venue: Ivy church, Didsbury (Known locally as Ivy Cottage Evangelical church).
97 Barlow Moor Road, Didsbury, Manchester. M20 2GP
Location: Google the postcode: M20 2GP ... or find your way to Didsbury village, and the crossroads (Wilmslow Rd / Barlow Moor Road) near Didsbury library, then go west along Barlow moor road about 400 yards. The church is a red brick Victorian building on the left.
For Parking, I recommend finding a spot on one of the residential streets NORTH of Barlow Moor Road … such as Elm Road, Linden Road, or Pine Road, these are all a short walk from the church. Please don’t try to park on Hesketh Ave, it gets rather congested.
NB We have fairly new carpeting in the church, and concerns have been noted ref food and drink. So please bring a lidded (insulated) mug (if you have one), to minimise risk of spillage. Please enjoy any snacks & sandwiches, but be sure to clear up after. Thanks.
I’m sure we will have a lot of fun on the day!
Tim Cockitt, Chief Auctioneer.
The auction is filling up rapidly.
We have now allocated 307 of the 320 lots!
Anyone contacting asking to be a seller will now be offered FOUR lots

I have now allocated 329 lots, but I anticipate that there will be some allocations returned, so I have opened a waiting list for people who are late to request seller lots.
UPDATE ... 20 Lots available
Having had nearly all seller lists returned, I am confident we could fit an additional 20 lots into the auction.
So if you haven't yet emailed the auction team c/o email@example.com, and you would like to put some lots in the auction, then please contact us soonest.
Tim Cockitt. Chief Auctioneer.

UPDATE ... 4 Lots available
I have had contact from some late sellers, and we now just have FOUR seller lots remaining
Email me soonest on firstname.lastname@example.org if you want them
Tim C. 15/2/18
Auction list is now CLOSED
The Manchester game auction is NEXT Saturday.
This year I have decided to put a simple list of auction lots here on BGG. This is the order in which the lots will be sold.
I am unable to answer any queries on individual games ... such as, which edition, etc. etc. When a seller has entered a non-English game I have tried to get confirmation that there are printed English rules in the box.
Note: the auction is always "buyer beware" ... we expect sellers to check their games to ensure rules, counters, board/map are present. If you take a game home and find it incomplete, then all we can do is put you in touch with the original seller.
NB We do not have the resources to offer a proxy bidding service. All bidding needs to be done in person, with payment in cash at the end.

This is a great service and the result of considerable endeavour by Tim.
I would like to just point out that these are the games that sellers have told us they are bringing on the day. Games are not submitted to us in advance. We have no control over items being withdrawn by sellers at short notice and, of course, no control over the various impositions and interferences of real life which may prevent sellers from getting to the auction on the day.
So please note that the appearance of a game on this list is not a cast iron guarantee that the item will be there on the day.
I had an enquiry today from a concerned auction regular. Given the adverse weather conditions, is there any possibility of the auction being cancelled.
I can confirm that the AUCTION WILL GO AHEAD (unless there is extraordinary blizzard conditions). I live about a mile from the church which is our new venue, and the roads between my home and the church are busy, and regularly gritted.
If we have fewer atending, we will simply go ahead with the people and lots which turn up ... and should we finish early, we can simply enjoy an unplanned boardgame session!
Here's hoping the weather is not too bad.
See you there.

If the weather does prevent you attending you don't have to wait until next year for your boardgame auction fix.
The 2018 Durham Boardgame Auction is scheduled for Saturday 22 September. (I defy the weather to provide snow that affects us on that day! )
And if you do get to Manchester why not come along to the Durham one anyway!
I went to the Durham auction last year ... and had a very enjoyable day out. The auction finished early, and we moved to the club rooms and played boardgames. Excellent. I highly recommend the Durham event.
Thank you, Tim.
I am still hoping to get to Didsbury tomorrow but the M62 may not co-operate! (The A66 might even be open. )
Sadly I am having to cancel this year, mostly due to not wanting to be a headline in the papers next week: "Mystery playboy frozen to death in Nissan Micra full of dodgy boardgames"
Evryone who does make it, travel safely and have a good time!
Count me in.
Great chance to grab a game or six.
The forecast for tomorrow is pretty clear so I'm going to go for it.
Just to confirm that the AUCTION WILL GO AHEAD tomorrow.
We've had a small number of people advise that they are unable to come, due to adverse weather / impractical driving conditions / health issues.
However, we will proceed as planned ... not so many lots in the auction, but it should still be a good event.
See you tomorrow.
God Bless. Tim.
... and friends from Durham, and Wales, are en route.
I'll go get the kettle on.
Our boiler has packed out so had to spend morning calling a plumber!
Will still be going but will be delayed. (About 30-40 minutes)
How much will we be missing during this time?
Thank you very much to the team led by Tim for another enjoyable Manchester Boardgames Auction. The location was more comfortable than the old Scout Hut in Romiley even if it did require a bit longer journey!
I am now safely home examining the loot: both planned and spontaneous purchases.
The Durham Auction will be on Saturday 22 September.
See the separate thread for details - as they are promulgated.
Cheers folks, another great day, and a venue that's an order of magnitude better than the Scout Hut (especially considering the weather!)
Safely back in Bournemouth with my haul - For those that like to know these things - my wife did indeed spend more than me whilst she was in the Trafford Centre so no grief for me in terms of spending. However she was less impressed that I had filled the boot and half the back seat with games....
Thanks again guys for organising my favourite event of the year - the new venue is a great success and I look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
Another great day - especially as I had to miss the previous year.
Thanks to all involved in the organisation, you all did very well.
