What this variant is trying to accomplish is creating a balanced 2-player setup where Africa (Yellow) isn't blocked off, but different cities in all area are, in order to create an experience that is closer to the 3/4 player game.

You could also do it like this:

Yellow
Oracle - Cube
Oracle - Cube
Temple - Cube
Trade - 5 Coins
-----Remove-----
Oracle - 2 points
Temple - Cube

Red
Temple - Cube
Temple - Cube
Temple - 2 points
Trade - 5 Coins
-----Remove-----
Trade - 5 Coins
Oracle - Cube

Green:
Trade - 5 Coins
Trade - 5 Coins
Trade - 2 points
Oracle - Cube
-----Remove-----
Oracle - Cube
Temple - Cube

Here the composition of the cites remains the same as if you block off Africa. THREE Oracle Cube Cities, THREE Temple Cube Cities, FOUR Trade 5 Coin Cities, and TWO 2-point Cities (Trade and Temple).

Thoughts or Suggestions?

Thanks for your thoughts.

The first priority was to keep it simple and come to the 3p/4p experience as close as possible. Thus, we dropped the other issue, namely having the same number of cities per type.

In a 2p game and an open map with all cities in all regions available you would be able to get the cities you want and that fit your strategy very easy. In particular, if the other player focuses on other strategies than cities, you would have a huge advantage. Therefore, the other player MUST build cities, even if he is not interested in doing so. I want to limit the power of cities in balance with the player count. Limiting the VP-cities to only 2 instead of three is another point (as you have considered correctly).

We are now testing behind the scenes the blocking of other cities than just pushing of Africa from the map. We are also testing some smaller modifications without starting a big change to rules and handling.

One option is deleting the single city of each type in the corresponding region plus one of the three times per type in that region. That leads to 2+2 cities per type in every region. Appolonia would be deleted as a 2 VP city. We are progressing as this seems to be an issue for a lot of players, although others seem to like the 2p variant as it is in the Spielworxx edition.

Stay tuned.

Edit:
the home towns should be limited in access too.
Other issues could be considered (card sliding, deleting cards completely).

Updated to replicate new 2-player board layout:

Yellow
Oracle - Cube
Oracle - Cube
Temple - Cube
Temple - Cube
-----Cover-----
Oracle - 2 points
Trade - 5 Coins

Red
Temple - Cube
Temple - 2 points
Trade - 5 Coins
Trade - 5 Coins
-----Cover-----
Oracle - Cube
Temple - Cube

Green:
Oracle - Cube
Oracle - Cube
Trade - 5 Coins
Trade - 2 points
-----Cover-----
Temple - Cube
Trade - 5 Coins

For Home City section of board you'll have to figure something out. My recommendation is look at it starting at top row far left and following down on diagonal ( middle row middle spot, bottom row far right spot), each player can build on those spots. Then both players combined can build in ONE other spot only in each row.

There are some additional rules for the card sliding and eliminating some cards, not only changes to the board. TMG will make the complete rules available (including solo variant) soon.
