Is San Juan any good? I know I can just look it up on here but was hoping for some thoughts. any other good ones? PS I already have Labyrinth, a family favorite for us and our 12 year old.

If you like Labyrinth perhaps you'd like Sanssouci or Indigo.

I've only played an app version. I didn't like it. However, that's largely because I had already played Race for the Galaxy. San Juan is almost a subset of RftG. It's a great introduction to the system if you're put off by the learning curve of RftG and its symbology. However, once you play RftG, you'll never go back.

So, it's fine but I'd recommend RftG. It's a better game once you dive into it.

Just a heads up, orders with Zulily can sometimes take a while to show up.

My wife is a big zullily fan, but half the time a package shows up and she says, "I ordered this months ago. I kind of forgot that I ordered it."

Luckily, they sent me a UPS Tracking number scheduled for delivery Tuesday.

Re: [zulily.com] Ravensburger sale
I had San Juan in my cart but wasn't 100% sure about it and it ended up selling out in the meantime. seemed to go quick. Just as well I am not sure I was all that into it. Sounds like I would rather sink my $ into RftG. A game I have had in the back of my mind on my wish list. maybe I need to look deeper into it.

Unrelated to board games, but I did grab a 3,000 piece puzzle for my wife at a great price, so not a total loss.

Zillow seemed to have some items with a rocket next to it indicating next day shipping and some without. San Juan had the rocket, the puzzle did not. Maybe it will be a good mid Feb surprise ha ha.

Alright, ha ha. Stupid auto correct. I guess that does explain the shipping charges though

I love Sanssouci. Probably in my top 10. Great puzzly tile laying game. Rahdo sold me on it originally.

My kids love Indigo. Lots of temporary alliances and subsequent betrayals.

Great prices on both.

Granted, you would need to be ordering more to justify the $12-15 CAD flat rate shipping to the states, but if ever looking, BoardGameBliss has Linko pretty regularly for $10 CAD (roughly $8 US):

Awful sites! If there's so much negativity toward this type of site on here, I'm surprised that they have any business at all.

Sale isn't dead but they sold out of most of the games last night. I did get LINKO! and actually got a good deal on a huge 3,000 piece puzzle. But most of the other games went fast.

It was strange, shipping for the puzzle was $5.99 and jumped to $7.99 if I added LINKO!. But when I put puzzle in cart I was told I would have free shipping rest of the weekend. So I just got the puzzle, then turned around and got the game with no shipping costs. very strange business model.

It's a great introduction to the system if you're put off by the learning curve of RftG and its symbology. However, once you play RftG, you'll never go back.

So, it's fine but I'd recommend RftG. It's a better game once you dive into it.

(I sense a disturbance in the Force...)

The two games are very similar because they share the same progenitor: Puerto Rico. Thomas Lehmann was contracted to design a card version of PR, and while he was working on it Andreas Seyfarth came up with San Juan. That left Lehmann’s design to be rebranded and thus we have RftG.

Both games feature role selection from a group of cards that are similar in effect to roles in Puerto Rico. San Juan maintains the same mechanism as PR, namely that each player will choose a role and get an extra benefit from it before all of the other players get to perform that role’s action. Each role can only be selected once each game round, and there are more roles than players.

Race does something slightly different in that players choose their roles simultaneously. Thus, multiple players can choose the same role and all of them would receive the extra benefit. This also means the number of roles that will be selected each round is variable, depending upon how many duplicate selections there are.

That makes San Juan more predictable in my mind: you know that the number of different roles selected each round will be equal to the number of players with the exception of a 2P game in which case a third role will be selected by the start player at the end of the round. The number of different cards in the game is lower than RftG especially when you consider expansions.

Both are good games, and I own and play both of them. In my mind though, San Juan is the more streamlined design, and so I for one did go back to it after playing Race.
