It might upset the balance a bit, but by throwing in both versions of the heroes into the decks, you are giving the starting heroes weight and making them more important than the other heroes you might acquire throughout a game.

Rules on usage:
- Only 1 version of the hero may be in the in play (warzone) at any given time.
- If one version of the hero is already in the warzone and you have another version of the hero card in hand you may discard it and draw another card.
- If you have both versions of the hero in your hand, you may discard one to draw a card.
- Neither versions of the hero may be garrisoned.
- Players may expend 1 energy to replace a hero in the warzone with the alternate version in their hand.

Cool variant!

Another method we've been using is allowing the players to decide which version of their Hero to use after they have finished drafting their Sector 0 pre-game draft heroes. This allows players to capitalize on their early customization choices. But in this case you would still only allow 1 Hero per deck.
