Hi! My brother loves to play board games. One of his favorites is a German game called Power Grid. I am looking for a similar game in Japan. I am living in Tokyo at the moment. If anyone could recommend any, that would be very helpful. Thanks so much!

Hi Rebecca,
If your brother likes Euro Games like Power Grid, you might want to explore the following games (in any order):

The Great Zimbabwe
Concordia
Caylus
Keyflower or Keyper
Terra Mystica or Gaia Project (depending on whether he prefers Fantasy or Sci-Fi).
Great Western Trail
Troyes
Russian Railroads
Dinosaur Island
Vanuatu (second edition)
The Palaces of Carrara
Grand Austria Hotel
The Voyages of Marco Polo
Santa Maria
The Castles of Burgundy

I mean, there are many many awesome euro games out there, but for starters you can try with those.
If he happens to like abstract games, definitely try Azul
Hope this helps! and welcome to the hobby and to BGG!

Are you looking for Japanese-made boardgames, Japanese-themed boardgames, or any game you can buy in Tokyo? Do you need the game to be published in English?

I can't speak for the OP, but selfishly I'd be interested in compelling board games that you can get here but can't get easily in the US, as I'm also living in Tokyo for the next year or so.

I am in the same boat. I am figuring out how to secure a copy for myself.

Could you get the game Iki there? It is done by a Japanese designer. Only a few copies are available in the US. Maybe less $$?

I've no idea how it plays, but I like the aesthetics of Stone Garden. Too expensive for me to buy on the off-chance that it is something I'd like, but I did gift a copy to a family member in the UK.

Other games I've had recommended to me (but haven't played) and that I don't think have been mentioned yet are:
Sukimono
Isaribi
Hanamikoji

+1. It's a tiny game but forces you to make decisions more torturous than many big games can manage. Not sure it fits the requested criteria but I love it to bits.

Hi Rebecca,

I think your brother might be more interested in euro games (which you can also find in Japan). Power Grid is generally much more mathy, longer and complex than most boardgames produced there:

- Yokohama, heavy game, similar to power grid in complexity. Not sure if still in stock
- Round House, a very good Taiwanese strategy game that can be found in Japan
- Minerva, medium weight strategy game
- Ole-Kaji or Friendly Taverns and Monsters, from Tagami games
- Perpetual Life, a medium-light strategy game
- Mask of Moai, a very unique VR co-op games.
- The king of frontier, medium-light strategic game.
- Dorasure, a very Japanese co-op game. Requires a translation sheet.
- Dungeon of Mandom VIII, a very light bluffing game from Oink Games
- Deep Sea Adventure, a very light push-your-luck game from Oink Games
- A Fake Artist Goes to New York, a very light party game from Oink Games
- Garden Eel Go! a super light game

In general, most games from Okazu, Manifest Destiny, Saashi & Saashi or Oink Games are good. I'd also recommend you attend to the Tokyo Game Market, you'll find hundreds of boardgames only available there.

Check:
- Okazu Brand http://okazubrand.seesaa.net/
- Manifest Destiny http://ash.jp/~md/
- Saashi & Saashi http://saashiandsaashi.tumblr.com/
- Taiwan Boardgame Design http://www.tbd.com.tw/
- Tagami Games http://tagamigames.web.fc2.com/
- Game Market http://gamemarket.jp/

You can buy some of them in Role and Roll (Akihabara), Yellow Submarine (Multiple Locations) or some of the big stores like BIC Camera. The first two have the largest selection though.
