Are there any NZ celebrities or public figures who love to play boardgames? Newscasters, directors, comedians, TV stars, etc?

Wasn't there a rugby player that was mention in the media that played our type of games?

Anyone with a better sport brain than me that can remember?

One of the Warriors endorsed Seriously Board a few years ago ago after buying (or being given?) a game from them - Jerome Ropati. Couldn't tell you if he is into these kind of games, or whether it was for his kids.

Not sure if this is who you meant? Obviously rugby league rather than rugby union.

Top sports people are celebrities in every country. No escaping that.

Unfortunately, it just so happens that NZ is one of the very few countries where rugby players top the list of sporting celebs.

I vaguely recall a league player giving some sort of shout out to David and Angela when they ran Seriously Board.

Carl De Visser co-designed the board game Endeavor and is currently a Lead Designer at Grinding Gear Games which is the largest video game developer in New Zealand and creates the very popular PC game Path of Exile. Not exactly a commonly known celebrity but could count as one in the right crowd.

Read the whole thread Alistair this is referenced above you.

And you do realise that you are typing to yourself on a public forum?

Yes. But it's too hot and I've been up since 4am.

Fine.

I think we can take it. :)

In a similar register Dean Hall, also a CEO of a video game studio (and a bit known internationally in the video gaming community) seems to be quite into boardgaming (from a picture of their office): http://www.insidersdunedin.co.nz/business-insider/2016/7/25/...

Jerome Ropati has been mentioned when he did a shout out for SB. The context of that was that he suffered a season ending injury, and we'd heard he enjoyed modern board games, so a game was sent his way:

I know that a bunch of the Black Caps are avid gamers, though I don't know details.

Nigel Latta of Politically Incorrect Parenting is also a gamer:

Siouxsie Wiles, an Associate Professor who appears on Radio NZ and sometimes on TV to discuss science stories in the news, apparently supported Cakes and Ladders (an Auckland board game cafe) so I guess that means she is into board games too.

I'm friends with Siouxsie - I keep forgetting she's famous. Can confirm she plays the occasional game at least, she owns Carcassonne and she really seemed to like Pandemic (she's a microbiologist specialising in infectious bacteria and making things glow in the dark...)

I think (Sir) Peter Jackson might be a wargamer. He certainly has an interest in military models and figures.

You could also approach the world-renowned designers that live here in NZ. You've even got Weta right there in welly

Unfortunately the list of world renowned designers who live in NZ no longer includes Martin Wallace. He relocated to Australia in October last year (ref: Jan 1st 2018 episode of the "war games to go" podcast).

This was always the plan apparently, but it ended up happening quicker than he expected.

Shem and Weta were very well represented at Wellycon last year, this is about finding more/new people to reach.

"That said, she does have a hidden strength - her love for board games. She particularly likes games like Werewolf, where you lie about who you are and what your goal is. Her usual strategy is to be as honest as she can in the early stages, and appear to be helping the good people win. Then, at the most opportune moment, she reveals her true colours."
