The rulebook calls them "Victory points." Most other games either call them "Victory Points" (both words capitalized) or "victory points" (neither word capitalized). Same thing with "Bonus card," "Trading house," etc. Is it a German translation thing?

I'm not sure why, but it's probably a typo. Capitalization is a funny thing between languages and also terminology. German capitalizes all nouns. English capitalizes proper nouns. Writing and editing a game rulebook in English is also a tricky thing and the guidance rules aren't exactly set yet. As of now, it is a style choice. Does the publisher want to capitalize their specific game terms or not?

Perhaps they thought it was a scientific name.

The system of nomenclature used today is based on the binomial system of nomenclature, developed by Linnaeus in the late 1700's. The binomial system of nomenclature is structured so that the scientific name of a plant consists of two names: (1) the genus or generic name, and (2) the specific epithet or species name. There are rules to follow when writing a scientific name.

Genus Name

The genus name is written first.
The genus name is always underlined or italicized.
The first letter of the genus name is always capitalized.
Example: Sansevieria or Sansevieria

Specific Epithet

The specific epithet is written second.
The specific epithet is always underlined or italicized.
The first letter of the specific epithet name is never capitalized.
Example: trifasciata or trifasciata

That's an excellent point as well. I'd be inclined to agree with David that the particular editor probably used this rule.
