Subject: Interest in a Fire & Ice Ladder? rss

Anyone want to join a Fire & Ice ladder on snellman? I'd want at least 20 people to start with. If you're in, post your username below - feedback on the format also welcome.

Everyone starts 1 new 4p game every fortnight - match-ups are determined entirely by ladder positions.

Whenever a game finishes (and note this doesn't have to happen before the next games start), the winner jumps up three rungs on the ladder, 2nd place jumps up one rung and 4th place jumps down one rung.

Games use all the expansion rules (i.e. including extra final scoring), and a randomly selected map (from the 5 currently on Snellman). Player order is allocated randomly, and we'll use similar chess clock settings to the 4p league.

(Note that people officially join the bottom of the ladder after their first completed game - until that point they still get fortnightly games but aren't considered to be ranked in any particular order - in particular, when we kick off the ladder whoever wins a game first will start at the top of the ladder!)

You can opt out at any point after joining by messaging me (I guess you'll hang around on the ladder in case you want to return, but gradually slide towards the bottom as people below you win...)

I'll administer the league manually to begin with (with a publicly viewable google spreadsheet), but if it proves popular I'll probably make a website.

----

Update: we currently have 33 players, so this is definitely going ahead. First game will be Sunday 11th Feb, so add your name below before then if you want to get in on the ground floor (or rather the top rung )

What a good idea Chris! I've been looking for a fun new competitive setup, and like the multiple maps idea to keep the game fresh. Count me in: thejordan

I’m interested but not convinced. Are new games started before the last one finished? Also, how long will this run? Just a thought, but have you considered doing a modified Swiss style tournament? It would be similar in structure, but with an end and a champion.

Cool, sounds like there's enough interest! I'll start it next Sunday (11th) so still plenty of time to get involved.

That's right. The benefit of this is that there's no pressure to get a game finished by a particular deadline. Plus it enables staggered games.

Theoretically forever! Although I suppose at some point the sun will consume the Earth / everyone will start playing Gaia Project instead.

I quite like the ongoing nature of a ladder. But a Swiss style tournament sounds pretty fun too - if anyone wants to set one up I'll definitely join!

Will consecutive starts be synchronized?
IMHO this would be best.
Question then would be if you want to stick with "every 14 days, same day of week", which might be most easy to remember, or go for fixed dates like 11.+25. (I think 8.+23. might be best but never mind), which meams maximum distance to TMtour season start.

Do you have an idea how to randomize the setups already?
(Nice idea anyway:-))
