I used to order from funagain.com now and then, but I've largely given up because it is impossible to tell if they are going to get a game in or not.

They list almost every game that they don't currently have when it comes up in a search as "backordered", then on the game page it says "this item is currently backordered". This includes games that are truely on backorder, but it also includes many, many games that are no longer available. I've seen this dozens of times. For example, I just verified this with "The Journeys of Paul", which is completely out of stock and unavailable forever except in the second hand market (the publisher recently answered my email inquiry saying so).

The result is that I can't know whether there is any reason to click the "notify me" tab on "backordered" games, whether I should bother to wait for them to get a game.

All the other online retailers I use keep this information updated. Does funagain not care? Not realize this is a problem?

I'd guess that it's for pulling in customers through web searches.

I had this issue. I went in on their Essen mule service specifically for the Commissioner Victor games. The order sat for awhile with no updates and the status for the two games remains pre-order (even when checked just now). I finally sent an email to them earlier this month to be notified that they have no expected date of arrival and I cancelled my order.

Just a short generic answer about tons of stock and not a lot of staff. I could have guessed that. That makes sense in general, but I wonder why the other online retailers that seem pretty big are able to keep updated regarding in-stock status.

The biggest problem is that they actually accept orders on some of these, as the post above noted.

I just sent them a message pointing to this thread... they have been known in past to respond to posts here on BGG so we'll see...

Basically my experience with Funagain is:

In Stock - In stock and ready to ship
Pre-order - Expected to be in around date shown
Temporarily Out of Stock - Expected to be restocked soon
Back Order - Out of stock indefinitely

They usually have stuff around MSRP, but to be fair, their rewards ramp up faster than CSI and they max out at 15%. I have also seen them, on occasion, have the cheapest prices, and they typically have stock longer. That being said, for most cases, you are right that they are not that cheap.

Hello,

The entire website is about to receive a makeover that's going to make
things a lot better for everyone. For now it is either in stock or it
isn't. We don't have access to very old titles any more than anyone else
so if the game is out of print and it is back ordered we most likely
will not get it in again.

Thank you,

Funagain Games

maybe that will also solve the problem folks have every big clearance sale where clearance items are limited quantity at the clearance price... ie. folks checking out only to see price at regular price in their cart

Not only that, when they switched over to their points system they accepted points from other retailers if you sent proof. I did that with my CSI points and reached the 15% discount. I'm not sure if they still do that, but this makes Funagain very competitive with other online retailers and sometimes cheaper once the 15% kicks in.
You just need to make sure you're signed in to see the discount.
Cheers!
