Just saw this one on pre-order. Wonder if anything changes - rules or production wise

I'm happy some new people will have the chance to play DS (I own it since 2012), but I wish they (somebody?) finally rethink/revise the graphics of this otherwise spectacular game.
I know the current one is actually a "revised" edition, but it's still one of the worst looking games I own, and every single person I introduce to the game points out how ugly it looks. I'm sure DS could sell MUCH more with some professional effort in modernizing its looks.
My 2 cents.

personally I think 2nd edition looks worse then the first edition and I wish they hadn't "updated" the looks at all from the first ed.
being able to read the gamestate is more important then looking good IMO.
just 2 more cents for the opinion pile

I fully agree... the 1st edition was probably better looking than the 2nd (not a masterpiece anyway). I probably used "modernizing" improperly. I simply would appreciate a professional graphic revision. Games look damn cool nowadays, and it helps.
...BTW: I would never replace cubes and cones with minis, just to be clear.

Good. We're in agreement then.
The fact that colours aren't tied to specific species makes it so much better

Well this is the easiest thing to "fix", it's actually specified in the rulebook - the animal tokens are double-sided. We always use the b&w side, since we have our preferred colors

most of us do that too, I think the colors being tied to animals hasn't even been mentioned during the teach. It was ignored and have never heard of it before you told so.
