Hello,

I was wondering if you could recommend a game for a medieval battle.

My main interest would be two armies facing each other on the battlefield rather than a tactical game such as Diex Aie/Cry havoc.

thank you
Gilles

Medieval Battle, obviously.

Well, probably not.

Hows about.....
The Grunwald Swords
Swords of Sovereignty: Bouvines 1214 – Worringen 1288
Great Medieval Battles
Commands & Colors: Medieval ... not yet released....

May add more later when brain kicks in.

Ancient Battles Deluxe has 30+ medieval scenarios available but you will have to pick up nearly all the expansions to have access (the Samurai expansion likely has even more but I don't have that one...).

Blood and Roses from GMT covers several battles from the Wars of the Roses. Vae Victis magazine had a series medieval battles in By the Edge of the Sword.

Invasion 1066: Stamford Bridge has nice rules and is fun to play. Readily available too.

The latest C3i(#31) also has a scenario + counters using Men of Irons rules.

great suggestions! Thanks a lot.

A friend of mine has Infidel

Men of Iron looks interesting.

I have meanwhile purchased the cheaper games that still look good to try them out:

Swords of Sovereignty: Bouvines 1214 – Worringen 1288
Le Lion et l'Epée

Command&Color Medieval age is a tidy bit too early for the period I am interested in, same as stamford bridge. Interesting nonetheless.

The Sword & Shield Series are now on my radar as well, thank you

Taktyka I Strategia has a series of games in system: Medieval. These cover battles like Hastings, Bannockburn, Kulikowe, Legnica, and several more.

Yeomen: The 9 Card Agincourt Game -- solo, pnp
William the Conqueror: 1066 -- diceless, a bit dated
Yeoman -- best of the Prestags, very dated
Right Fierce & Terrible: Sluys 1340-- its rep seems to have improved
Loyaulte Me Lie: Bosworth Field, 1485

BattleLore (1st edition) has some medieval scenarios. More are added in BattleLore: The Hundred Years' War – Crossbows & Polearms and BattleLore: Code of Chivalry.

Commands & Colors Medieval, at least the first volume about to be produced, covers Byzantine battles around 500-700 AD, which isn't what most people think of as "medieval". No doubt there will be follow-on volumes with later battles.

Northampton 1460 is an interesting game with lots of flavour for that specific battle. That said, it's not a million miles away from Table Battles and there's now a Wars of the Roses edition of that.

As Antonie recommended the Taktyka i Strategia games are good and inexpensive. I have Kosowe 1389, Hastings, Stamford Bridge, Fulford 1066, Peipus Lake 1242, Warna 1444, Kulikowe 1380, Legnica 1241, Grunwald 1410 and Bannockburn, Falkirk, Stirling Bridge. I am a fan of Charles Vasey's Flowers of the Forest which is an excellent study of Flodden. The Ludifolie editions are also excellent and good value. They include Norman Swords (3 eleventh century battles), Royal Swords (4 battles between the early twelfth and early fourteenth centuries) Swords of France (Fourteenth and fifteenth century battles), Swords of Sovereignty (Bouvines 1214 and Worringen 1288), The Lion and the Sword (2 battles of the Third Crusade)and in a similar vein each featuring several medieval battles are The Dauphin and the Sword, The Truce or the Sword, Swords and Crown and Swords and Crusade. There are also easy to find Clash of Arms games, Wallace's War featuring the thirteenth century battles of Falkirk and Stirling Bridge and Barons' War featuring the late thirteenth century battles of Lewes and Evesham.

This was one of last big battles with mounted men at arms, bowmens, etc... So maybe not strictly medieval from time point but definitely feel is there.

Next game in system will be Grunwald 1410.
