Personal Quest Guide

Below I have some info on how to get to the scenarios that will help you complete your personal quest. You can search via its name or number. Each item has two spoilers. The first reveals what the quest parameters and rewards are. The second spoiler reveals my research on the scenarios that will assist you in completing your quests and possibly some minor strategy tidbits.

If you enjoy this you may want to check this out as well:
Scenario Reward, Chest, Negative Effects, & Achievement Guide 1.0 (w/ spoiler tags)

IMO this is fairly light on real spoilers. It really just points one in the right direction regarding which scenarios to pursue in order to complete a personal quest. I don't think this contains any significant spoilers. This is particularly true if you only look at the advice for your personal quest.

This flowchart tool is super helpful in finding how to get to various scenarios: Scenario Flowchart

SIDE NOTE: Personal quests are not intended to be kept secret from your fellow adventurers unless you want to do that as a house rule. Also, there are duplicate rewards. If finishing your personal quest would lead to a reward that has already been given out you will get a random side quest and a random item instead. Some people have voiced frustration about getting duplicates so I figured noting that here wouldn’t hurt.

Any advice on additions, changes, or errors is welcome via GM or noted below.

510 Seeker of Xorn

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Complete 3 Crypt Scenario's & follow 52 to completion
Reward: Cthulhu Character

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Scenario's 4,5,& 6 are all crypts, are available after scenario's 1 & 2, and are not mutually exclusive. This should be easy to accomplish.

19 is also a crypt. The scenario path to get to it is 4>5>14>19.

Possible correction or new info:

511 Merchant Class

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Have the following items: 2 Head, two torso, two feet, 3 hand(s), 4 small
Reward: 3 spear character

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Scenario 17 is supposedly good for gold farming which could help with this. The easiest way to get to 17 is 3>8>13>17. 4>6>8>13>17 is a slightly longer available path.

512 Greed is Good

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Have 200 Gold
Reward: 3 Spear Character

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Scenario 17 is supposedly good for gold farming which could help with this. The easiest way to get to 17 is 3>8>13>17. 4>6>8>13>17 is a slightly longer available path.

513 Finding the Cure

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Kill 8 Forest Imps then follow Scenario 59 to conclusion.
Reward: Open Envelope X.

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Main scenarios with Forest Imps: 7, 40, 48
Shortest paths to get to these scenarios:
a. 3>8>7
b. 3>9>11/12>16>25>33>24>32>33>40
c1. 3>8>14>
c2. 4>5>10 OR 3>9>11/12>18>23>26 OR 3>8>14>7>20>18>23>26 OR others I won't list...
c3. 22>31>38>48
Getting to 48 is a bit of a chore. 14 is a requirement but isn't on the path to 48 and there are several very different ways to get to 22 which leads on to 48. The easiest is the first option listed under c2.

There are Imps associated with various side quests as well. For example 3 of the 9 random scenarios feature Imps so you could try to hunt them down. The treasure in the following scenarios will offer up a random side scenario: 1, 8, 17, 24, 49.
Paths that will take you to the scenarios with the desired treasure:
a. 3>8>13>17
b. 3>9>11>16>24
c. 4>5>10>22>35>45>49

The following is a spoiler until you retire your first character and reach prosperity 4:
Dexter345 wrote:

I wonder if it's useful to mention that one of the side scenarios to which there is a clear path has Forest Imps. Town Records:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
After you retire a character and hit Prosperity 3 (I think) 4, you get access to 72 - Oozing Grove, which has Forest Imps in it. This is a long ways off for some people, but still might be faster for groups who did 9 - Diamond Mine instead of 8 - Gloomhaven Warehouse.

514 A Study of Anatomy

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Experience your party members becoming exhausted 15 times
Reward: Saw character

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Play as a healer & repeatedly lie about not having any heal cards left...

515 Lawbringer

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Kill 20 Bandits or Cultists
Reward: Sun Character

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Bandits and/or Cultists can be found in the following scenarios: 1, 2, 4, 5, 12, 19, 20, 22, 28, 39.

Since these baddies show up just about everywhere I am not going to create a list of how to get to each of these scenarios at this time.

516 Pounds of Flesh

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Kill 15 Vermlings
Reward: Lightning Character

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Main Scenarios with Vermlings: 9, 17, 18
The two simplest Paths to these scenarios are 3>9>12>18 OR 3>8>13>17
The challenge with this is that scenarios 9 and 8 are mutually exclusive. So you can get to 9 and 17 or you can get to 18 but not to all 3 of those scenarios.

There are Vermlings associated with various side quests as well. For example 3 of the 9 random scenarios feature Vermlings so you could try to hunt them down.

517 Trophy Hunt

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Kill twenty different types of monsters.
Reward: Phoenix Face character

Spoiler (click to reveal)

This should happen over time without too much trouble.

Each large square stat card is a different monster. So each boss is a different type as well. Source: https://rpggeek.com/wiki/page/thing%3A174430%3AOfficial_FAQ#...

The following is fastest you could do this as far as I can tell. It involves you landing the killing blow on every type of monster in each scenario. This plan could be sped up depending on which random side quest you get from the treasure chest in scenario 1.
1: +4 - Bandit Guard, Bandit Archer, Living Bones; Total = 4
2: +3 - Living Corpse, Boss; Total = 6
3: +3 - Inox Guard, Inox Archer, Inox Shamon; Total = 9
9: +3 - Hound, Vermling Scout, Boss; Total = 12
11: +3 - City Guard, City Archer, Boss; Total = 15
18: +2 - Giant Viper, Ooze; Total = 17
43: +3 - Flame Demon, Rending Drake, Spitting Drake; Total = 20

I may try to address this later on:
ltmarcos wrote:
On PQ 517: Might be pretty minor but your math is off. You list 3 monsters in scenario 1 and then say it totals 4 monsters. So you are off by one in the end
This at least will get you pretty close.

518 Eternal Wanderer

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Complete 15 scenarios
Reward: Circles in Circles Character

Spoiler (click to reveal)

This is like death. It is inevitable.

519 Battle Legend

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Earn 15 checks
Reward: Music Note Character

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Complete the battle goals and finish the scenarios.

520 Implement of Light

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Find the Skullbane Axe in the Necromancers Sanctum & kill 7 living bones, living corpses, &/or living spirits with it.
Reward: Sun Character

Spoiler (click to reveal)

The Skullbane Axe is found in the treasure chest in scenario 20 or as a scenario reward in scenario 11/12 (this is a change in edition 2+ but is errata'd for the 1st edition). Thanks go to Dexter345 for pointing this out.

The scenario path to get there is: 3>8>14>7/13>20

Once you have the axe in hand you can kill various living dead in the following scenarios:
4, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 26, 28, 29, 39, 40, 41, 42,
You should be able to reach this goal with ease once the Skullbane Axe.

Since these baddies show up just about everywhere I am not going to create a list of how to get to each of these scenarios at this time.

521 Take Back The Trees

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Complete 3 Dagger Forest Scenarios then follow Scenario 55 to completion.
Reward: Rock Face Character

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Main scenarios in Dagger Forest:
3, 28, 29, 38, 43, 44, 48
Side Scenarios in Dagger Forest: 59 (unlocked by Personal Quest 513), 81 & 91 (unlocked via road events)

Examples of paths to complete Dagger Forest Scenarios:
a. 4>6>3>9>12>28>29
b. 4>6>3>8>14>7>20>28>29
c. 3>8>14>4>5>10>22>31>38>48
Side note on option c. 31 grants access to 43 and 38 grants access to 44 as well.

522 The Thin Places

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Complete 6 side scenarios (>51)
Reward: Circle & Crescent character

Spoiler (click to reveal)

The treasure in the following scenarios will offer up a random side scenario: 1, 8, 17, 24, 49.
Paths that will take you to the scenarios with the desired treasure:
a. 3>8>13>17
b. 3>9>11>16>24
c. 4>5>10>22>35>45>49

Personal quests 52-62 all count as side scenarios and are related to personal quests: 510, 513, 521, 522, 526, 529. If you tag along while other adventurers complete these they will count for you.

Many of the side quests are found via city events so do as many city events as possible.

Only 4 of the side scenarios come from road events so road events are not as helpful here.

I have not found clear info on how to open up the envelopes associated with the sealed quests 72, 73, 76, 77 but they would count.

523 Aberrant Slayer

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Kill 1 of each demon: earth, flame, frost, night, sun, & wind demon.
Reward: Triforce Character

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Scenario 20 and 27 have at least one of each type so heading to one of them seems like a solid strategy.

This should be a comprehensive list of main quests that have demons.
Wind Demon: 4, 15, 16, 21, 22, 27, 33, 35, 36, 42, 46, 50
Earth Demon: 4, 7, 10, 16, 21, 22, 27, 33, 35, 36, 48, 50
Flame Demon: 5, 10, 21, 22, 27, 33, 35, 36, 40, 43
Frost Demon: 5, 14, 15, 21, 22, 27, 33, 35, 36, 39, 46
Night Demon: 5, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28, 31, 42, 46, 50
Sun Demon: 10, 21, 27, 28, 50

The shortest path I can see to do this:
4>5>14>19>10>22>27
You can skip scenarios 10 and 22 but completing 27 makes 10 unavailable and those two scenarios have a lot of demons so they are likly to really help.

Scenario 20 only has Night Demon; I'm guessing you meant scenario 21.

And this:
Quote:
The shortest path I can see to do this:
4>5>14>19>10>22>27
The shortest path to meet all demons is 4>5>10, and you'll reach those faster than 21 and 27. The path to 21 is 4>5>10>21.

Earth | Flame | Frost | Night | Sun | Wind
4: Earth Wind
5: Flame Frost Night
7: Earth
10: Earth Flame Sun
14: Frost
15: Frost Wind
16: Earth Wind
20: Night
21: Earth Flame Frost Night Sun Wind
22: Earth Flame Frost Wind
26: Night
27: Earth Flame Frost Night Sun Wind
28: Night Sun
31: Night
33: Earth Flame Frost Wind
35: Earth Flame Frost Wind
36: Earth Flame Frost Wind
39: Frost
40: Flame
42: Night Wind
43: Flame
46: Frost Night Wind
48: Earth
50: Earth Night Sun Wind

Of course, doing 21 or 27 is quicker if those are already unlocked or only a scenario away. I don't know if people should be warned more about locking out content. Completing scenario 27 blocks a lot of content if that content hasn't already been played.
BLOCKER DETAILS:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Up to nine scenarios (though some scenarios are mutually exclusive and you get to play more of them if you're "evil") including a City Event which unlocks two scenarios in a chain. Scenario 21 does this as well to a lesser degree and at least you get the City Event.

Thanks again for the guide!

524 Fearless Stand

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Reward: Phoenix Face

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Be one Bad Motha
Spoiler (click to reveal)

Seriously though...
If you play a 4 player game and your character deals the killing blow on all the Elite Monsters than you could be done with this after completing Scenarios 1-4. That isn't realistic but this should just be a matter of time and setting your character up to deal the killing blow on elites often.

525 Piety In All Things

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Donate 120 gold to the Sanctuary of the Great Oak.
Reward: Saw Character

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Scenario 17 is supposedly good for gold farming which could help with this. The easiest way to get to 17 is 3>8>13>17. 4>6>8>13>17 is a slightly longer available path.

526 Vengeance

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Complete 4 scenarios in Gloomhaven & then follow 57 to completion.
Reward: Open Envelope X

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Main scenarios inside Gloomhaven:
8, 11, 12, 18, 23, 26, 31, 35, 36, 50, 51
Example of potential Path(s):
a. 3>9>11/12>18>23>26
b. 4>6>8>14>5>10>22>31>35 (if you complete 35 prior to 31 than 31 will be blocked unless you also already completed 21 wow)

527 Zealot of the Blood God

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Become Exhausted 12 times
Reward: Lightning Bolt

Spoiler (click to reveal)

Kamikaze!!!

Wiser advice is below if that is less than satisfying.

“When appropriate, you can start short resting at the end of every turn.
Then take a damage to lose a different card, then lose 1 card from your hand or 2 from your discard to prevent that damage. You can lose 2 to 3 cards a turn with this method, or just take the damage and kill yourself if you're already low.

Just keep in mind you can't rest at all if you don't have at least 2 cards in your discard pile.”

b1. 36
b2. 35
b3. 14>31
b3.1 39>46>51
b3.2 38>48>51
All of those are of course not necessary but I got carried away.

529 The Fall Of Man

Reward: Open Box with Circle & Crescent.
Lingering Swamp Scenarios:

Main Scenarios with Oozes: 18, 26, 30 (side: 52, 53, 60, 61, 64, 66, 72, 87, 88)

Fastest Path to this I can see:
3>8>13>20>16>24>30

If you need to kill more Lurkers the path to get to 37 and 47 isn't short.
Here is a possible example:
4>5>14>10>22>31>43>37>47

Completing the PQ condition specified unlocks the new scenario. You then have to complete that scenario and any linked ones until you gain the reward originally indicated on the PQ card.

There were a number of Personal Quest requirements that were reduced between First Printing and Second Printing, with 513 being one of them.

a full summary can be found here:

(there is probably a thread somewhere that lists the changes as well, but I only knew of the pdf in the file section offhand)

Might be pretty minor but your math is off. You list 3 monsters in scenario 1 and then say it totals 4 monsters. So you are off by one in the end

Crap. I don't want to figure this out again right now. I will make a note that it is a bit off and perhaps try to work something out a bit later.

Also you should note that Sun can be earned by having 10 Reputation and Crescent by having -10 reputation - I think it's worth noting as they essentially duplicate those classes' quests.

If you create a new character, and its personal quest is
Spoiler (click to reveal)
complete a certain amount of side scenarios

but your party has
Spoiler (click to reveal)
already completed some

Does they count towards the total? I'm assuming not because
Spoiler (click to reveal)
I doubt the same would apply if you had to kill a certain number of elite monsters, and your party had already done so.

No, they do not. But you can repeat them on casual towards the quest.

Spoiler (click to reveal)

If you have to kill a certain number of something, then you have to be the one that gets the killing blow. The quest doesn't say your party kills X enemies, it says that you have to kill X enemies.

This is great, but I suggest a correction to quest 533.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
You say "3 drakes" but it is specifically 3 Spitting Drakes. While your guide does cover this with scenario 13, it should be called out more specifically so no one thinks scenario 24 covers both Ooze and Drake requirements.

This is SUPER helpful, thanks!! Question about Seeker of Xorn and other "Do X scenarios then unlock Y...". How do you unlock scenario 52? Is it automatically unlocked after doing the scenarios, or is there another way to unlock it (find it in a chest, auto unlock by completing another scenario, etc)?
Completing the PQ condition specified unlocks the new scenario. You then have to complete that scenario and any linked ones until you gain the reward originally indicated on the PQ card.

Once the Personal Quest scenario is unlocked, with Seeker of Xorn for example, is it required that the party complete the scenario immediately? The wording of the card could be interpreted as an imperative and instructions on what must be done. Is it intended that it becomes the next scenario the party undertakes?

Or is it intended that the party can complete these unlocked scenarios whenever they decide to do so?

It’s just another scenario you have open to you. When you complete it is up to you, but you can’t retire until you do.

There’s an obvious-in-hindsight reason that it can’t be mandatory to do it immediately: what if you unlock two of these at once? And yes, that is possible:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Scenario 19 could be both your third Crypt and second Lingering Swamp scenario.
Scenario 48 could be your third Dagger Forest scenario and give you the last Forest Imp kill you need.
There may be other ways in the side scenarios, too, although I think all of them would have to involve Forest Imps.
