So, it turns out it is easy to slop black paint in the alliance marker details, then gently abrade the exposed layer to emphasise the motif. laugh

What paint and what "abrading" method? Did you wait until the paint was dry, or wipe it off when it was still wet?

Yep. A black wash, followed by a second black wash when the first was dry to deepen the black a bit further, and almost immediately rubbing the prominent surface with a paper towel, or lightly with a kitchen scouring pad. Basically wash until the desired level of 'grime' is achieved.
