Well, that depends on which Green cube it is. In this case you seem to be referring to Gearbox, which does allow you to move 1 Light Gray space for each place you are in currently (1st place moves 1, 2nd place 2, etc...). You also move 1 bonus Light Gray if you are in last place so 8 moves on Light Gray is correct if you are 3rd in a 3 player game. In a 5 player game you would move 12 Light Grays.

If you are one of the leaders one of the ways to defend against this is to end your move on a Light Gray space so the last place player can not use the Gearbox to its full extent, essentially blocking the trailing cars.

Yes, it is a powerful card, but there is no guarantee to win with it and it does add wear to your bag every time you use it.

Sorry if this has already been asked but have to ask as it just didn’t seem right.

Third player is in last place in a 3 player game.

He pulls 2 green cubes. He then moves 8 places round the track almost doing a full lap in a single go and wins

Sound right?

Was a hilarious finish but seemed a bit weird. Maybe only because we were doing just 3 laps and 2 green cubes were a fluke pull.

Saying that I can see everyone buying green in future!

Just to be clear, the players are moving on "Light Gray" spaces with Gearbox? If so, the play is legit.
When Gearbox is the green cube, pulling less than three of four in a turn is the fluke pull. The green Gearbox cubes are usually the first ones bought in our games. They are bought by all players until the supply runs out. We play mostly 2-player and 3-player games.

As a house rule check the car position after the placement of first green cube, then for the second one move it accordingly.

Obviously this game varies a lot depending on the cards drawn for the colour cubes. However, usually it takes moments to see what the 'in-demand' cubes will be and what track spaces will be most used. The strategy many miss when playing this is where you leave your car at the end of your turn.

Too many just go as far as possible.

With the Green Gearbox you're using, for example. You should be trying position your card to create bottlenecks where other drivers need to use a white or dark-grey (track and/or expansion dependant) cube, or other special cube, to get round you. Even better if you can position so that they don't get to make full use of their green moves (say only 2 grey spaces after them with no way around).
