Of course you all followed the news in the Netherlands this week. But for the few of you who missed it: our Minister of Foreign Affairs was found to be lying about a meeting he had had with Putin. See https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/dutch-foreign-mi... (sorry, I can't find how to embed links in texts anymore).

And what does a politician, a member of government even, do when he is found out lying? In some countries he will launch a barrage of angry tweets and accuse the media of bringing fake news. In other countries ...

But the real news that every Dutchman is following: https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/olympics/womens-speeds...

This, and the American sports reporter who explained that we Dutch people are so good at speed skating because we all commute to work over the frozen canals in Amsterdam every day.

The real wait is for Prime Minister Rutte to resign as well, given that he has known about the lie for weeks, and that if the press hadn't discovered the lie both minister and PM would have been more than happy to keep calm and carry on. So what they are really sorry for isn't the lie, but the fact that they were found out. Rutte has made more mistakes in this area, and I for one would be happy to see him go.

Well, that IS how I got to work this morning and every other morning before it. All year every year. Yeah!

For a moment there, reading the subject line, I dared to hope for some honesty in political naming, with the announcement of a Minister for Lies. Ah well
