I like to post a thread like this periodically, collecting everything I’ve been up to and current status. I do this so folks can find some of my stuff, but also for my own sanity.

It’s been more than a year, and there have been a lot of miles logged in that time, so this is more than due.

This thread doesn’t include everything I’ve done, but is an updated version of the late 2016 edition, that you can find here:

December 2016 - https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1686869/whats-gwek-been...

For reference, here are some earlier “thread-gathering” threads, so if there’s something you can’t find here, it might be there. If there’s anything that’s prominently missing, let me know and I can update the current thread. If you think I might have worked on something but you can’t find it, feel free to ask me here or via private message.

August 2014 - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1222895/gweks-projects-l...

As a bit of historical reference (I found it kind of entertaining to find these), here are two of my earliest customs threads:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1061549/custom-crew-and-...
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1075300/gweks-house-rule...

And the ever-useful massive spreadsheet with tons of Firefly stuff in it, recently updated and cleaned up:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/140286/firefly-refere...

I’m going to break the other links into a few different posts, for PROJECTS, HOUSE RULES, ANALYSIS and CAMPAIGN IDEAS.

1) PROJECTS are the larger projects I’m working on (or, in some cases, have finalized), like LOCAL COLOR, ACES & EIGHTS, and THE BLACK MARKET. Note that this doesn’t account for everything. A lot of the one-off cards I’ve created here and there are not accounted for, although by now I’ve grouped many of them into projects.

2) HOUSE RULES are just that. Some are developed. Others are just ideas.

3) ANALYSIS includes a deeper look at various elements of the game, sometimes from a mechanical point of view, sometimes from a thematic side. With confirmation a few weeks ago that Firefly: The Game is essentially complete, I may be revisiting some of my analysis threads throughout the year to see how things have changed.

4) CAMPAIGN IDEAS is a broad catch-all centered around the idea of a multi-game campaign (perhaps solo, perhaps not). This includes some ideas for things that might not work well in a single game but might find more traction in a multi-game situation, like Loyalty, Mutiny, and Crew Relationships.

1) PROJECTS

- LOCAL COLOR: Complete. Version 2.0 will be worked on somewhere down the line.
- ACES & EIGHTS 2.0: Complete (and subsequently revised).
- FANTASYLAND: Complete.
- SHIP PACKS, WAVE ONE: Complete.
- THE BLACK MARKET: Actively being worked on.
- “THEY’VE ALL GOT STORIES”: In active discussion.
- SYFY’S FRIDAY KNIGHTS: Probably up next after THE BLACK MARKET.
- BETTER WORLDS: Includes Londinium and The Operative as a Contact. This will likely be my capstone project.
- ALTERNATE SET-UP
- SHIP AND CHARACTER PACKS: Includes DISTANT SUNS. Always being fiddled with!

This thread, about custom cards and proxy ships, isn’t about any single project, but plays into a few of them:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1607709/gweks-custom-sh...

LOCAL COLOR

First up, we’ve got LOCAL COLOR, a deck of random events and opportunities that can help broaden game play. One important aspect: each card includes an option that can be played against other players as a form of sabotage, adding another aspect to player-vs-player. The thread below include the main thread for LOCAL COLOR, as well as a new thread for a version 2.0 that would update the deck for newer official products.

Current Status: LOCAL COLOR has been complete for some time. I plan to return to LOCAL COLOR 2.0 at some point in the future, to update it for Rim Space, PVP, etc.

Here’s a direct link if you’d like to purchase the deck on Artscow (followed by some threads about the project):

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1802889/local-color-20 - newer thread with some insights from PBF games

ACES & EIGHTS

ACES & EIGHTS, somewhat comparable to BREAKIN’ ATMO, includes new cards for the core supply decks, themed primarily around the crew of the Aces & Eights, from the Firefly RPG. The full deck is 42 cards, including house rule cards and a few other elements.

ACES & EIGHTS was previously packaged with SHIP PACK #1: WHITE LIGHTNING, but with the revised version, that has changed and it is now packaged with a 12-card FANCIBLE DRIVE CORE/SHIP UPGRADE PACK.

ACES & EIGHTS includes:
- 5 new cards for each of the original Supply Decks
- 1 card for each of the Rim Space Supply Decks
- 2 "promo cards" to replace Helen and Meadows
- 5 Set-Up Cards (3 new Leaders, 1 Drive Core, 1 Ship Upgrade)
- 3 new Bounties
- 5 House Rules cards

FANCIBLE DRIVE CORE/SHIP UPGRADE PACK:

- 1 double-sided House Rules Card
- 1 Drive Core and Ship Upgrade card for Bonanza, Bonnie Mae, Serenity, Yun Qi, and Walden (Ship Upgrade card is double-sided)
- 1 Drive Core for the Artful Dodger
(Firefly Drive Cores and Ship Upgrades include new art and a unique look)

Current Status: COMPLETE! The original edition has been discontinued, and has been replaced by a second edition that you can order from PrinterStudio at the link below. The link that follows includes details about the entire project, including ship cards and suggestions for proxy ships, as well as some historical information.

FANTASYLAND

FANTASYLAND began as a fun little side project for my daughter (now eight years old), who has been playing a simplified version of the game with me for some time. It includes a number of Disney characters, including Tinkerbell and her fairy friends, many of the Disney princesses, some characters from FROZEN, Captain Hook and his crew, and the Octonauts.

Current Status: COMPLETE! You can order the 36-card deck at the link below. There are also links about the project, and the simplified “kids” version of the game that my daughter and I play.

SHIP PACKS – WAVE ONE

Each Ship Pack include stats for a new ship, suggestions on a proxy model for play, and 12 cards (in general, 1 leader, a complete Crew, and supporting Gear, spread across various supply decks). “Wave One” refers to three Ship Packs sourced from the Serenity RPG. The first one, White Lightning, was originally packaged with ACES & EIGHTS, but now these three come together.

Current Status: COMPLETE! Previous versions have been discontinued, and you can now order this group of three Ship Packs at the link below. This is followed by numerous links about the three Ship Packs.

Each Ship Pack will also come with a Story Card. The Story Cards for White Lightning and CanTankerous are below. A card for Huntingdon’s Bolt will be created at some point in the future.

SHIP PACKS AND CHARACTER PACKS

Although a few Ship Cards have been finalized, a number of others have been discussed. Additionally, some cards don’t belong on ships, though, so I may also work on some themed “Character Packs.” Although there’s not a specific thread for these ideas yet, possibilities include Dark Horse Comics characters, those left over from the series and movie, “common folk,” and possibly an expansion of some of the keywords I’ve introduced (Company, Synthetic, and Tong).

Current Status: Open-ended. Some Ship Packs will make their way into other projects (for example, The Betty will likely be part of THE BLACK MARKET). I have a vague idea that a few sci fi properties will be grouped into something called DISTANT SUNS (probably Cowboy Bebop, Rogue One, Guardians of th Galaxy, and maybe Rebels… Maybe even Solo, but the time we get there. Other less sci-fi-style properties (the A-Team, Leverage, my upcoming Jumanji pack) may also be grouped together as WILD CARDS or something similar.

THE BLACK MARKET

Some of the earliest customs included crew from the Riddick and Alien franchises (which I consider “adjacent” to Firefly). When someone asked me where those cards would all go, that got me thinking… and eventually THE BLACK MARKET was born. THE BLACK MARKET will include a new Supply Deck and a new Contact (a dealbroker named Mr. Black) and will include the official release of “Ruthless” crew (the opposite of Moral). One of the threads below includes Ruthless versions of some existing Crew and Leaders, which may be included in THE BLACK MARKET as alternate options.

Current status: Actively being worked on. This is my most ambitious project to date, so although a lot of work has been done, there’s still a lot to go. I took a solid pass at content in 2017 and there was quite a bit if playtesting. I’ll be updating and refining over the next few months.

SYFY’S FRIDAY KNIGHTS

There are a lot of stories that bear some resemblance to FIREFLY, but few as much as DARK MATTER and KILLJOYS. Having these two shows together on a Friday night almost scratched my Firefly itch for the first time in over a decade. This deck will include Leaders, Crew and Gear from both shows, and will feature a new location, a system called The Quad (from Killjoys). The Quad will have one or two Supply Deck (Leith Marketplace and/or Oldtown) and a sorta Contact in the R.A.C.

Current Status: I made a good amount of headway on this early on, and remain happy with many of the cards, although there’s always room for improvement. This will likely be my next major project after THE BLACK MARKET.

This project will likely cover the first three seasons of both shows, at least broadly. Not sure if I’ll address the final two seasons of KILLJOYS as it gets a bit further afield from the Firefly vibe.

BROWNCOATS AND BRIGANDS

This is a bit of an opportunistic project. There are an number of elements in FIREFLY ADVENTURES that can be nabbed for Firefly: The Game, whether it’s physical components that can be literally retasked or Equipment cards that can offer inspiration for new Gear.

I’ve been fiddling with this idea since FIREFLY ADVENTURES came out, but haven’t gotten very far yet. As it’s evolved, I’ve been sort of thinking of it as an “advanced” version of the core game, adding a little complexity and boost to the five core contacts.

Current status: Ideas are brewing. They may well change as the first set of expansions come out and more are released.

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1916887/pillaging-briga...

BETTER WORLDS

The idea for BETTER WORLDS came from a few different corners. First – although I had previously argued against the idea of another Supply Planet in Alliance Space, the Loot Crate’s Londinium post card is so very pretty, too pretty to not use.

Second, there’s been some discussion about some of the decks becoming unbalanced thanks to customs. For example, it’s great that there are more Mechanics, but now it’s harder to get basic Firearms. Consequently, I’ve always had it in mind that my final major project would re-balance things.

Finally, there’s The Operative. Before KALIDASA came out, a few of us mistakenly speculated that The Operative would be a contact. Incorrect, but cool idea, though, right? In my mind, The Operative is a fully-Legal contact, but the jobs he offers are a universe away from Harken’s low-risk errands. Instead, these are black ops that feature skill tests, where failure can mean a Warrant or even Crew death.

All these ideas gelled into BETTER WORLDS, which I view, theoretically, as my capstone project, rebalancing exiting decks, and adding a new Contact and Supply Planet. This will probably be somewhat on par with THE BLACK MARKET or the Rim Expansions in scope.

Current status: A lot of ideas are spelled out in the threads below, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1875294/new-project-ide...

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1855762/welcome-londini...
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1416281/operative-contac...

”THEY’VE ALL GOT STORIES”

This idea bridges a few different concepts in the game, creating a sort of hybrid contact/supply deck. The basic premise is that, besides the jobs that contacts offer, there are many travelers out there looking for passage. Executed properly, captains can go into business for themselves. Or, a clever captain can convince passengers to help his crew on jobs.

Current status: A lot of work has already been done, but it often seems to get bumped in favor of other projects. Why not stop by the thread below and offer some thoughts?

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1297116/theyve-all-got-s...

ALTERNATE SET-UP

I’ve tentatively added this to the project list, but I’m not sure when – or if! – I’ll get to it. I like the idea of a modular, even random set-up system and may create a deck for that.

Current status: Someday?

3) HOUSE RULES

This post contains various house rules, most of them in a non-finished state, and a few related topics. If you see something you like, wander offer and reignite the conversation!

First up, a few custom story cards:

Every Dog Has His Day
https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1636143/story-card-ever...

Patience’s Range War
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1161053/solo-quick-play-...

Mingo & Fanty-themed card idea – under construction
https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1864007/mingo-fanty-the...

Then we’ve got the idea of Captains for Hire, or hiring other, unused leaders. Although they can be potent allies, having such powerful crew on your ship can lead to mutiny.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1078803/captains-hire

A discussion about the idea of leaders working for themselves, rather than contacts, with a generic system of looking for clues to hunt down, and subsequently sell, “McGuffins.”

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1312192/working-yourself

A few attempts at additional or varied NPC ships (specifically Merchants that can either be pirated or perhaps turn against you, and adding variety to Reaver Ships):

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1625952/bounty-hunter-n...
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1340077/merchant-ships
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1481817/other-reaver-shi...

A potential NPC ship deck for solo (or more interesting!) play, which includes some of the ideas above:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1574815/npc-ship-deck-s...

“NPC Cards” are sort of a catch all for an idea that might fall somewhere between Set-Up Cards and Story Cards, sort of a template that lays over the Story Card to make it more challenging, or to provide unique opportunities from folks who aren’t quite contacts:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1259698/now-something-to...
https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1626437/npc-card-haven-...
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1469505/haven-contact-wi...

An idea for making Legal play more profitable with a second fully Legal Conact, Inara’s Councilor, who would trade in favors and influence rather than just paying in coin:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1282693/councilor-idea-n...

A new type of supply, “Favors” are equipped like Gear, but represent influence or recurring or one-shot favors rather than physical “stuff.” Still, if you’re going to call in Mercenary Backup during a Job, someone has to manage the relationship…

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1349062/favors-idea-new-...

A thread about “permanent” gear, a new type of supply that would change a Crew for the remainder of the game:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1600183/new-gear-idea-p...

An exploration of house rules for Ruthless Crew (the opposite of Moral Crew), Persons of Interest (“Wanted” Leaders) and Banned Gear (“Wanted” Gear):

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1492077/ruthless-crew-le...

A simplified “young adult” version of the game that I play with my daughter:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1533451/kids

A thread with a simple suggested mechanic for helping or hindering other players:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1562944/helping-and-hin...

A two-player variant that includes starting crew:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1623041/2-player-varian...

A gaggle of new Misbehave cards. I may revisit this at some point.

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1588584/i-aim-misbehave

A discussion of potential “B-story” or “back on the ship” game effects:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1632688/meanwhile-back-...

An idea for making every planet in the ‘Verse unique:

4) CAMPAIGN IDEAS

Although this could technically have gone under House Rules or even Products, I’ve grouped ideas related to campaign play together under a separate heading.

So, here’s a thread discussing how a solo campaign might work:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1078809/solo-campaign-id...

Another thread for “episode-based” play that would create somewhat free-form goals:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1581906/episode-based-p...

Side-quests were an idea that I tried to implement in regular games, but they would up being too tricky and might have more value in a larger campaign that spans multiple games:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1096580/side-quests

“Finales” are something I toyed with briefly to make some story ends more dramatic. They would probably work best with solo or maybe 2-player play, but might also play well in a larger game.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1159859/finales-existing...

Prizes are something we’ve talked about as sort of one-shot rewards for winning one game. This could be part of a campaign, or could even be used for a group that plays on a regular basis:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1387971/prizes

Here, we’ve got a few threads related to Loyalty and Crew Relationships. I’ve toyed with these a lot in regular games and found that they seem to get swept to the side pretty easily. I think they’re interesting enough (and one element of the show that doesn’t really appear in the game), that I’d live to try to execute them in campaigns.

Disadvantages, or Complications, for Leaders are another idea like Loyalty and Crew Relationships, that could deepen the game. From owing a debt to Niska or Badger to being a dishonorable lout that Soldiers won’t follow, Disadvantages could be selected or chosen randomly and could affect either whole games or provide temporary setbacks. They can be used to spice up a game and force new strategies, or as a handicap when players of different experience are facing one another:

Guest Stars are an idea related to some of this that may actually pop up an one of the stand-along projects (possibly FRIDAY KNIGHTS).

OTHER STUFF

Here’s a current thread of What I’m up to focused on new projects (as opposed to this thread, which is more about history):

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1857665/whats-coming-gw...

A new FAQ/unresolved questions thread has been created:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1942782/2018-faq-addend...

For historical purposes, here are some older, related threads. I believe everything has been pulled into the thread above:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1697850/questions-re-ol...
https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1109210/dear-gf9-unansw...

To Do:

With A&E and the first wave of Ship Packs complete, now might be a good time to pause and organize before jumping into THE BLACK MARKET or another project. With that in mind, I’m giving myself a to-do list. Not necessarily in order:

1. Revise and Reference spreadsheet to include final A&E/Ship Packs and some other requests.
2. Create definitive “final” threads for complete projects (ACES & EIGHTS, SHIP PACKS: WAVE ONE).
3. Revisit Cost Generators (Crew, Ship, Gear, maybe Upgrade)

Crew Cost is here:

Wow. Just...wow. You have been a busy man. And while I'm at it, Thank You for sharing your Firefly creations with everyone. I appreciate your work.

While clicking through your many links, I found your cards for Browncoats: Redemption. Quick question on that is, Did you ever make a ship card for that vessel?

George,

I knew you had done plenty of stuff, but I hadn't appreciated just quite how much! This is a thread to bookmark if ever I saw one.

I would take my hat off to you if I wore one.

Keep up the great work.

That's why I do it, man. I enjoy doing it for myself, but a lot of times the real thrill is knowing other folks appreciate and use it, too.

I don't think we ever did a ship card or got much discussion beyond the basics for the crew. I may need to revisit that one at some point.

Looks like you need help....

Great Job. Love My Local color deck (needs up date though). Have not tried my Black Market yet.

I want to help with Local color 2.0, sort kicked things off back in 2013 for Local color 1.0.

I remember that original thread!

Keep an eye on the boards throughout 2018. I'm hoping to get to Local Color 2.0 this year. After The Black Market. And Browncoats & Brigands. And maybe TAGS. And maybe Friday Knights. And...

Just checking in after a long absence. I'm running "Saving Pirate Ryan" at Conquest Sac next month and wanted to see what was out there to add once again
Took a look at your Ship Wave One expansion, the one with so many of the KillJoy characters. First of all, great work as always. I've never failed to be impressed with your work, but I think I found a couple bugs on the printerstudio page for the deck. I haven't kept up with the threads, so maybe they're intended to be that way but I thought I'd mention it.
5 of the crew cards have blue "cant take the sky from me" backs used for leaders, but are not leader cards.
3 of the crew cards have Bounty deck backs (or three Bounty cards have incorrect fronts!)
Those are the obvious ones I can see. Might be worth checking the file to see if there are others.

Keep up the great work, your efforts are appreciated, by all of us.

Well, that is a problem. That is not at all the right cards. Looks like somebody's been messing with my stuff. :/

Edit: Yep. Someone changed the contents of the Ship Pack to "Leith Expansion." Please don't do that, folks. If you MUST make changes to my projects for some reason, please let me know so that I can double-check afterward.

I've deleted the incorrect project and will rebuild the correct Ship Pack project later tonight.

Cool - glad I could help bring this to peoples attention. would not want to buy a deck and have it messed up. I think I'll order a set once you have the new one set up correct, and post the new link.

Again, fantastic creations.

I think the links are fixed here. They should definitely be okay in the original announcement thread. I even added a project that has Aces & Eights AND Wave One for those who want it.

I got an Aces & eights a while back, so unless its changed, I'll probably just get the "one" pack, and maybe the Local Color deck

This is a revised, post C&P edition, so a number of cards have been updated. I’m on my phone so I can’t post a link but if you look for the A&E 2.0 thread, there are details.

As someone who thinks that there's no possible way of adding "too much" to this wonderful game - I absolutely love the work you've put in on this.

My group loves Local Color, and looks forward to the day (in the possibly distant future) when the 2.0 reboot gets released! Luckily (or unluckily, maybe), the game is unlikely to see anymore big expansions - so a version 3.0 shouldn't ever be needed

Exactly! That's one of the reasons I re-vamped ACES & EIGHTS after the release of CRIME & PUNISHMENT - to bring it fully in line with all existing material.

Always happy to hear when folks are using LOCAL COLOR, even if it's showing it's age these days...
