The game starts with two shells in each dish except for each player's bottom right dish, which is empty.

On each turn, a player takes all the shells from one of their dishes (that is, the dishes in the two rows nearest them) and sows them anticlockwise around the twelve dishes in these two rows. If the last shell lands in an occupied dish, they take all the shells from that dish and continue sowing until the last shell lands in an empty dish.

If this empty dish is in the player's back row (nearest them), they do nothing further and their turn ends. If it is in their front row, they capture all shells in their opponent's dishes in the same file (front row and back row). Exception: if the opponent's front-row dish is empty, the back-row dish is not captured.

(The published rules do not make clear what happens to captured shells, whether they are taken off the board or added to the player's own dish.)
