What every ones favorite way to play with 4 players? Do you follow the rules in the book, play 2v2s, FFAs, matched or narrative?

Me and three of my friends meet up about once a month and play. Usually we stick to 2v2 matched played but have done a few narrative games too. Our matches are usually 500 points a player or 1k a player. We usually select one player on each team to have a warlord and gain the traits. And use a shared pool of command points for a team but each side only gets battle-forged once.

You should ask this on the dakkadakka.com forums. BGG is not big on 40k.

2v2 is the most common format I play.

For rules purposes, treat it as though it was standard 1v1 game, and follow normal army building rules for each side. Decide on the overall point level of your game, and then let each player bring a detachment that is half of your overall point level. Don't break up the army too much - you want just a single warlord, a single pool of command points, etc. Your team then collaboratively plays out each turn, but each player has specific decision making power over their models. You might want to designate one player on your team as the overall commander, since there may be disagreements about how to spend command points, or other such decisions that are not specific to a particular player.

Since it's your game, you can vary from these rules however you want. You can do narrative missions, you can play with unequal player points, you can mix player's models into the same detachment, you can ignore some of the army building rules to match unlike factions (a common thing that we do is play mixed factions - have a Tyranid and Eldar player playing against a Imperial and Ork player).

As an example: four players want to play a 2v2. They decide that they want to play 1500 points. Alice and Bob team up with Space Wolves and Imperial Guard, and they assemble two 750 point detachments of troops. Charlie and Dave team up with Orks and Tyranids. Dave is a new player and so only has a few models of Tyranids, so they decide that Charlie is going to bring 1000 points of Orks, and Dave is just going to cobble together a mishmash of genestealers and a carnifex. Dave can't quite create a detachment that conforms with matched play, so they just decide to have his stuff be an unbound detachment. Technically that would make the entire Ork + Tyranid army unbound, but everyone decides to let the ork forces use command points and get their detachment rules (the rules are flexible, bend them). They choose one of the new chapter approved missions, everyone gets their stuff deployed, and they play a game.
