Is there any other way to get caps except :
1) The initial ones you gain at start of the game
2) Selling items at the shop
3) Completing certain quests

We played a two played game which ended up with neither of us winning (the factions reached the end of the track with neither of us having enough points to win). We were stuck trying to get more caps but none of the staged quests gave any for completing them (only one quest had given caps as a reward throughout the whole game). We had no weapons or armour and nothing left sell to get caps to buy them. Some of the quests required you to pay caps to complete them but we didn't see a way to do that.

The feeling was we must be missing something... are there other ways to get caps?

You get caps by doing encounters in "wasteland" locations. The higher the number of the location, the more likely you get more caps, or loot witch you can than transform into caps in the shop.
You can also get caps by getting one of the "luck" perks.

You can also get caps from loot card "A Fistful of Caps" which there are several copies of and Fortune Finder luck perk which gives you 8 caps. Also Armorer and its' weapon version perks can be used to take a valuable apparel or weapon to sell it I guess. Other than these and the ones you said there is no other way as I know, so yeah, gaining caps isn't easy.

OK thanks. I think we were doing the encounters wrongly having just checked the rules again - we were including all the encounter cards of a type together instead of just the ones with a star in the corner. As a result a lot of encounters yielded nothing and made no sense.. we will try again and see if it goes better next time.

Thanks for your replies

Encounters in wastelands form a nice income. Not every wasteland encounter but several of the cards in the starter deck will give you options to gain caps, sometimes dependant on the encounter level so those 4's are definatly a go to.

Depending on what's in the shop, the best opening moves would be doing a wasteland encounter or two. You probably don't have enough caps to buy anything usefull before that.
