I know that not all gamers love trading in games, it can tend to bog down the time per turn and people who don’t understand the game mechanics can have a very hard time keeping up. Monopoly and Catan are nostalgic games from my childhood (Catan being the better of the two IMHO), but I can’t seem to find a game with as polished of a system as Catan. In Catan, the trading is open, yet hugely important. Trading is one of the main mechanics of the game. I’m not talking about being able to share your cards in Catan or Dead of winter, I’m talking about haggling, negotiating, and making deals. I’ve tried Bohnanza and it didn’t do it for me. Do you have any suggestions on a game with great trading mechanics, but is not Catan?

I’m interested in Chinatown and Planet Steam, though I don’t know much about either of these.

Thanks!

Genoa is an excellent game that is all about trading and negotiating the best deals. Every turn involves some kind of deal-making.

There is a game that's all about trading. Soundproof room recommended!

Seriously... I'm sure that there are a number of great games that fit the bill. My mind is blank at the moment though.

(Pandemic works as well.)

Another possibility is something in the Civilization series such as
Civilization or
Mega Civilization
This would be a longer game, and more expensive than some of the others you are considering. But trading phases are an important part of the game.

Archipelago, you can trade just about anything in this game, including your turn order.

Chinatown is definitely worth getting if you like trading games. Everything is up for trade (even possibly your comfy seat at the table)

Genoa is very good but it does need at least 4, preferably 5 & it needs to be the right 5. It's possible to have a very non-interactive game if you have the wrong group. With the right group, it's excellent. Trying to work out who got the better of any deal might not be immediately obvious

Chinatown is definitely a good candidate for a trading game.

One of my favourites in this space is Lords of Vegas.
