By far the darkest co-op that I have played is This War of Mine: The Board Game. You play as a group of civilians trying to survive in a war torn city. You make really tough choices to just survive. Very thematic. Not for the faint of heart. Good game with an average rating of 8,2 on BGG.

Another good dark co-op is Black Orchestra. You play various germans who are plotting to assassinate Hitler before and during WW2. How often do you get to play the role of would be assassins, plotting, avoiding arrest and trying to kill the leader of your nation. The longer it takes to assassinate Hitler the more millions will die in the war.

I find themes like this much darker than fighting imaginary monsters.

Might want to try the video game first (might be cheaper/easier to get) to see if you like the basic story. It is dark, the video game gets a little "fiddely" in a micromanaging sort of way. Just looking at the game makes me think it is similar.

Anything from the Lovecraft mythos would suit you, I think - I'm partial to Elder Sign: Gates of Arkham, but Arkham Horror or Eldritch Horror would work too.

Long play (more than two hours): Eldritch Horror
Medium play (one-two hours): Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game
Short play (about an hour): Elder Sign

Eldritch Horror and Elder Sign are Lovecraftian-themed and both based around the idea of a team of investigators defeating an ancient evil. Legendary Encounters: Alien is a deck-builder based on the Alien movie franchise. All three are great fun.

Back in the early 80's, SJG published "Killer: The Game of Assassination". It was fairly popular on the campus of UGA at the time among the gaming crowd, and one person (not me) put up flyers all around campus with a phone number to get a round of the game started, stating "Whose up for a game of assassination?"

The week before (then) Vice President Bush Sr came to campus to speak at the University's Bicentennial ceremonies.

Needless to say that person got an introduction to how the Secret Service works

Edit: oh, and on topic, +1 for The Grizzled and This War, both very dark.

Mansions of madness second ed. and the arkham horror card game work relativly well with two players, although the former might not be 100% co-op all the time.

Thank you for bringing this up. It looks very interesting and is now on my list.

The Shared Dream is an amazing story telling co-op that is fairly dark! Another idea would be The 7th Continent. +1 for This War of Mine: The Board Game as well. Good luck!

Kingdom Death: Monster is dark, co-op and best with two (in my opinion). Might be too gory for you, though.

I would say they are very dissimilar.

TWoM is extremely story driven, dark, but meaningful for the most prat.

You might also try Fireteam Zero. Probably not for everyone. A good stroy campaign, but more 'game' aspects to it I think.

Lots of good suggestions already.

The only other one I can think of is Spirit Island where you play as island spirits that are attempting to destroy the European Settlers that are settling on your island.
