Quote:
“You’re scared of the NRA,” President Donald Trump declared in a room of lawmakers Wednesday during a meeting on guns that pushed Republican priorities to the sidelines and had Democrats in the room cheering.

A bipartisan group of legislators met in the White House to try to make headway on gun law reforms in the wake of the deadly shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school that left 17 dead and injured more than a dozen others.

Throughout the hour, Trump often veered into uncomfortable territory for Republicans and at times broke with his party altogether, reiterating support for policies many in his conservative base have taken issue with.

I have said on occasion that the only way Trump could alienate his hardcore base would be to go against guns. I wonder how well this news will travel to their corners.

I'm actually really curious. If POTUS Hillary said anything like this, there would be impeachment hearings tomorrow. If a junior politician said this, their career would be dead and over.

Tomorrow I'm sure there will be furious walkback from the White House. Will Trump supporters accept the walkback and go on as if nothing happened? That would be something to see.

Of course, there is always the change will show some huevos and, uh, stick to his guns. But - hahahahah - this is Trump we are talking about.

Normally, the CNN breakdown of a Trump speech is just a bunch of cheap (easy) shots for a few laughs.

This one on the gun meeting is pretty worthwhile.

A remarkable admission from a Republican president staring at a Republican-controlled House and a Republican-controlled Senate.

My own favorite was quoted in a piece on Slate:

Quote:
The most striking moment in the meeting, though, came when Vice President Mike Pence was describing “red flag” laws in certain states that allow law enforcement to temporarily take away weapons from someone deemed a threat. Pence noted that you first need a court order to do so, respecting due process. Trump offered an alternative recommendation.

“Take the guns first,” he said, “go through due process second.” If Barack Obama had said such a thing, Republicans would have plotted a military coup. When asked about the remark afterward, most Republican senators did their best to maintain a straight face while noting that they disagreed with the president on that particular policy.

Take the guns first, due process second. I'd love to see some alt-right faces when they heard that.

Allegedly Trump has reversed his position again after a meeting with the NRA.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/mar/02/nra-chief-lo...

What was that thing about him going along with whoever talked to him last?

After that Kabuki dance with immigration anyone that expected a different outcome this time was sure to be tragically disappointed.

And on another depressing note

Quote:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is moving to banking reform legislation — not gun control or other responses to the high school shooting in Florida — next week in the Senate.

McConnell has filed a motion to have a procedural vote Tuesday on legislation sponsored by Senate Banking Committee Chairman Mike Crapo (R-Idaho). After that, McConnell hopes to move to legislation addressing sex trafficking, according to GOP sources.

Just more of what we all know: "adult day care center" was too kind. And anyone who *could* have a hand in minding the store is quitting or being forced out. So we're left with what we had on Day 1: a Drunk Uncle know-nothing who live-tweets his stories every day when he's not golfing.
