I'm not sure whether anyone's mentioned it before but Dread Ball looks like it was heavily inspired by Speedball, a video game by British developer The Bitmap Brothers (originally released in the late 80's for the Amiga and later Commodore 64 amongst others) about a brutal futuristic team sport featuring cyborg players which combines elements of ice hockey and handball.
A Speedball mini was included in one of the many Kickstarters for this game. And Speedball itself was inspired by the 70's James Caan edition of Rollerball. Right down to the thumping mailed fist from the attract screen. Jonathan E my boy. Check it out.
