For a change of pace, we played on a non-hexhex board, in this case 2x2x8, which has 25 hexes, so not much bigger than the usual hexhex3 (which has 19 hexes). (Sort of a mini-DVONN board.)

(This can be done on a Yavalath hexhex5 board by blocking off 3 rows from two opposite sides of the hexhex with the third color of stone.)

Final result of the first such game:

O O O . O * O *
O . * O . O O * *
* O * * . . O *

O won here with no further moves available.

I haven't tried variable boards yet. Did you have the sense that this added much?

We enjoyed it; it seemed to work fine. It added a sense of variety to the normal gameplay, since shapes were automatically constrained to be able to be long only horizontally, not vertically. (Plus I am a fan of variable setup.)

This impression is only based on one play so far, so of course take it with a grain of salt.

We blocked off a different part of our Yavalath board to make a trapezoidal playing area (like Pentalath). It was a fun change of pace!

The final board state:

X X O X O
O . O X X X
X X X O X . O
O O O X O O X O
X O O X . X . O O

As usual we're playing the no-merge variant, so neither player has a legal move here; it was X's turn, so X won.

Today we had a dramatic game with a close finish on a 5x5 "square":

X O . O .
O X X X O
. X O X O
O O O . O
X X O X X

No-merge variant; O's turn and O wins.

Looks like it was a fun one.

Today Anna made a zigzag radially symmetric wall across the center of the Yavalath board, leaving us a sort of stair-step trapezoidal playing area:

O X O . .
X . O X O .
X O O X X O .
. X O O .
. O .

Here X resigned as O has only one more move while X has several.

Today Anna walled off a 1/6-slice of our Yavalath board to make a 1+2+3+4+5 = 15-hex triangle. Smaller than hexhex3, but nonetheless good quick fun! Here's a sample endgame position, won by O:

O
. X
X O .
O O X O
O X O X X

Playing on the next larger triangle (1+2+3+4+5+6 = 21) would be very close in size to the hexhex3 board's 19 hexes.
