If not, whats the point of building attractions? Also,do you not earn any cash for people riding the coaster?

They give you more spots in which to place paying customers in phase 4, thus gaining you points each round. Some of them also have end game points.

1) Attractions give you additional slots for placing visitors, so that you can earn VPs every round.
2) Some attractions are worth bonus VPs at the end of the game.
3) Some attractions can offer money payouts instead of VPs for placing visitors every round.

Once you play the game, you'll see that each non-starting dino attracts 2-3 visitors to your park each round, but only provides a VP space for 1 visitor. Thus, you need somewhere for the extra 1-2 visitors to go if you want to score points from them.

This image seems to show excitement points for
Non-dinosaur attractions were considered (Pterodactyl Coaster gave 2 excitement for example). I wonder why they changed it in the final version.

People weren't building dinosaurs - they were building attractions that gave excitement and you didn't have to worry about threat. We figured it kind of defeated the purpose of the game if you didn't make dinosaurs for "Dinosaur Island"
