The thing I think that unites all those games, is not only that there's a lot of room for strategy and clever play, but they constantly generate new interesting game states you've never seen before.

Closest would be other Carl Chudyk games: Mottainai and Uchonia.

I'll also recommend San Juan and Oh My Goods. With different cards in your tableau, game state changes from one game to another.

Plus 1 to more Chudyk

Another one I see mentioned in this kind of area is Sail to India

But also

If you and your group have a high tolerance for learning complicated games,
Sierra Madre Games - specifically the Pax series or maybe even Neanderthal or Greenland - might be worth a look.

Bear in mind, they're a different beast to Dominion.

But there's chaos, changing game states, interesting and new things every game, and tiny boxes. So much game in the box!

Is this compact? We love Mottainai and that's what I came to recommend (so that's three votes for that one) but I know Import/Export falls into this general category. Based on the price though I assumed it was a much bigger game and had written it off. If it's compact it might be back in the running.

For one more recommendation - Food Truck Champion. But honestly? Just get Mottainai. You won't need Food Truck Champion if you get Mottainai.

Oh, another vote for Oh My Goods!. By far the most game you'll get out of something this compact.

What is your definition of compact? The game box is fairly small (6.5"x4"x3"), but game play takes up a good amount of table space.

It's a terrific game!

We definitely think of "compact" as box size and it sounds like Import/Export fits that definition! Unfortunately, it's a little pricey still ($40 on Amazon, $55+ here on BGG) so we'll wait until it drops. I think we paid all of $12 for Mottainai Deluxe and we're still enjoying it years later.

+1 San Juan

And I can't help wondering if there isn't a game by John Clowdus that would fit the bill -- he makes incredibly complex but compact card games. I'm just not familiar enough with his 3-player games to be sure. They're hard to get now in any case.

Personally, I enjoyed the original more, but only for flavor reasons. Would you say this plays better than the original? I've played the original like 10 times, and Last Rites only once, and won't be dogmatic about it.

That said, I really don't think this has THAT much replay value.
It's really good for the first few play throughs, but sinc eyou see the entire deck one card at a time each game, you never feel a sense of newness after the first couple.

None of the games in your title are compact in terms of gameplay space required, I'm going to assume you mean the packaging..
