Just theorizing here after our last game, but how does one stop this strategy?

Perseus looks at the starting map, sees where the monsters are, and then places his hero on the monument space furthest from the monsters as possible. He takes the Glory token of that color.

Turn 1) Usurp that region. Take control of the monument and claim its artifact. Gain an additional hoplite in that region.
Turn 2) Build Monument in the region where he is. When rolling the die for the monsters, be sure to move them as far from your monument's region as possible.
Turn 3-5) Repeat turn 2.
Turn 6) Build monument stage 5. This triggers the end of the game, and whoever controls that region after 3 turns will win.
Turns 7-8) Doesn't really matter. Just keep your hero in that region. So that on turn...
9) You usurp that region you started the game in (if necessary), and win the game.

We had a setup similar to this in our third game this evening. All the monsters in the south and Perseus starting in Red in the north. How does one stop this if they can't get that Glory token from him? It just seems that it is too powerful a starting ability, in light of the monument victory.

Or can one also reasonably claim 2 regions, 5 temples, or kill 3 monsters in 9 turns.

Please advise.

(On a side note, this was our 3rd game and we've seen only one monster attacked at all (and it was killed) in 3 games. It just seems to take too long to go after the monsters and then kill them, and if the hero is hunting monsters then they're not questing either.)

One addendum, there MIGHT be quests in the region of that color, so that is another way to get a glory token. Just an idea.

Heracles starts in a Region with Resistance 2 that can build a temple, near the weakest monster, in your case probably in the rough area where Perseus wants to keep the monsters.

1.) Build temple, move Heracles to the weakest monster.
2.) Pray to Zeus to gain STR, attack monster, 3 of the monsters can comfortably be killed with 4 cards at STR 3. Take Priest.
3.) Pray at Zeus or Hermes if Zeus not available. Move towards next monster, Prepare for heal + card
4.) use reset to hunt second monster, you ll likely have 6+ cards now, use your hero ability to trade in the glory token from first kill. Take Priest.
5.) Move, prepare as above, Pray to Zeus or Hermes depending on what you can/need. Always pray Zeus unless you can shave off a turn of moving by going Hermes.
6.) You ll likely go up against a strong Monster now, so I ll assume you need to hunt it twice. Once again, take priest, pray Zeus if possible. If not, just take random rewards and see if its cool
7.) Prepare for Heal/Card
8.) Finish off and win

This is how a non-optimal Hunt strategy looks against a monument spammer. Nothing can really prevent Heracles from moving around, nothing can keep him from using Prepare/Hunt spam unless somebody else picks up on this quickly and tries to race him, where the advantage of both having a usage for the glory token, and the starting STR, just gives him an edge. You can shave off a turn or even two if you dont get Hydra/Cerberus as last monster, which dont reliably die to one Hunt.

I dont think you can reasonably do a temple strategy in a 4p game in 9 turns because interference by everyone is impossible to predict, and land grab victories suffer from the same. MAYBE if the monument spammer uses Athena, and you can pick up recruits off of that, so you have the troops to actually control the temples, and the leadership to move them around. the reason for this is that you need to build a temple every round, which is near impossible to manage in an opposed game.

Sidenote: Quests, monster movement by other people or means, and the Chimera can seriously screw with the Perseus strategy above too.

Monument spam, be it for a quick hunt or a quick monument victory does seem to be the game's biggest problem.

How do you do 2 prepare special actions in a row. you don't start the game with a priest in the priest pool?

One question: why are you sure other players will allow you to build LV5 monement? After you finish LV4 monement, other player can build the last and march the monement in their last turn. They have many turns to prepare their army.
Do I miss something?

That is a VERY solid counter that I had not thought of. Thanks for bringing that to our attention.

Look at the above-mentioned gameplan. You ll have your actions ready all the time because the monument spammer keeps resetting them. I get a priest for the temple in turn 1. After that I get a priest from Hunts.

Didn't think about getting one from a monster.
