The Experiment

Things have been strange in the town of Innsmouth for the last several weeks. In a town where cult activity and shadowy figures seem to have been getting increasingly common, things are now quiet and pleasant. It seemed like your recent investigations were starting to make an impact and restore some sanity to the world, but things have become eerily peaceful. The interactions between a number of townsfolk almost seem choreographed. You're tempted to just enjoy the unexpected harmony that has returned to the town, but you fear there may be something more sinister afoot.

Hi Jeff,

Can you tell us what expansions are required to play, if any? The reason I ask, is because it is currently a bit difficult to check in Valkyrie as you must download the scenario to see if you are able to play.

That's a good call. I have just checked it requires:

Suppressed Memories
Streets of Arkham

It's worth posting in the Valkyrie reviews thread. It is less likely that get buried than an independant thread. Will also give players the option to rate and comment in one place.

Re: New Scenario Available - The Experiment
If you can, I'd suggest changing the thread title to state that it's a Valkyrie/UGC/unofficial/non-FFG scenario.

Not demeaning Valkyrie scenarios, but I saw the thread and thought they'd snuck out a new official DLC (which actually excited me more as it would show FFG doing what it should be doing instead of just launching new boxes).

True, not official FFG (do I get half credit for living 20 minutes from FFG?), but maybe it's better? The fan made scenarios are starting to add up and are getting comparable reviews:

Valkyrie has a few bugs, and isn't quite as clean as the official app, but it's a fantastic creation tool, and the community will likely become the most prolific source for original content. I appreciate FFG producing boxed content, although it's a little spendy, because that's the main source of materials, other than some custom minis. I wish FFG saw the value in enabling the community to create their own scenarios.

I'd definitely encourage people to check out Valkyrie. I don't know anything about programming, but scrubbless made a fantastic guide that made scenario creation very approachable:

Yeah, I really think official support for fan-made scenarios would only feed their business as people might need expansions that they might not normally have bought.

Glad it was of use! I've noticed an uptake in scenarios recently, which is awesome!

As for Valkyrie scenario reviews, we don't have nearly enough votes to make a direct comparison. Also the FFG thread voters don't have to worry about hurting anyone's feelings, I wonder how much that skews votes.

Thank you for adding (Valkyrie) to the title.

As I said - I wasn't trying to demean or devalue the Valkyrie scenarios. I'm a great believer in user generated content in general and know that some are excellent, and I expect them to only get better as designers get used to the tool and explore it's limits.

It's just that FFG has done so few DLC scenarios, that it would be more exciting if they stepped up and released a new one without much fanfare.

That would raise hopes that they maybe have more in development and aren't only releasing scenarios as part of a $50 (or whatever) box with a few bits of card and a handful of plastic...

I completely agree. But I bet the margins are just not as appealing as the boxes.
Plastic and card is cheap and the docs are ~10% the cost of the larger boxes.

Either that or it takes so long to write the scenarios, that by the time they have 2-3 it's time for a new box!

Sorry for being off topic.
I am new to the whole community scenario idea for Mansions of Madness . I own the second Edition game and one of the small expansions , suppressed memories possibly.

I wanted to comment on how pleased I was to find this community being built around a new tool.. The tool which allows the community to flourish the way it was intended. It seems its up to the people (like it has always been) to give it some direction and it pleases me to see the momentum and direction this Valkyrie tool is taking. I want to thank everyone who has played a part in making this evolve.
There are many games that have massive potential in this world but the hand behind the creation will always stop short of making a great game for fear that we will stop looking to buy "something better".
Valkyrie is was this game needs. The community and the game are already available.
I would like to support this effort as well as others so please show me where and how I can vote or review or comment with what it takes to make this a great game.
Thank you to everyone involved with Valkyrie.

Well said Andrew!
The Valkyrie review thread is here:
https://boardgamegeek.com/article/28793486#28793486

If in remember correctly "In the Dark" makes extensive use of Suppressed Memories (it's very hard, so be warned). If it's the other tile set you have, "Stress and Strain" uses that expansion (it's slot easier too).

If you get a chance to play Nicola (In the Dark) and I (the other one) would really appriciate your feedback.

If you enjoy what you have seen and want to try your hand at writing your own scenario, there are some great guides on the wiki:
https://github.com/NPBruce/valkyrie/wiki/QuestGuide

And I also put together a (rather large) guide for the editor (MoM specific):

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Gi5gTwKkw84Px0Lvk-bJ3Aml...

If you want to get involved with squashing bugs or generally see what's going on then NPBruce's GitHub is where to look:
