Forgive (and ignore) me if this exercise in silliness has already been done.

GIPF is the 'hub' game of an abstract series of games. In Ultimate GIPF (which I have never attempted), if you want to play a potential (a special piece with a special power related to the mechanisms of another game in the series), you stop the game of GIPF and play the related game in the series. If you win, you return to the GIPF game and get to use the potential.

So - I want us to create 'Ultimate Twilight Struggle'

When you play a card for its event, you have to stop playing Twilight Struggle, and break out a different game. Win that game, and you get to use the event. Lose that game, and you've wasted your turn.

I want you to choose a card, and the related board game you must play.

Example

"Ask Not What Your Country..."

From Kennedy's inaugural speech - if you want to play this card for its event, you must stop, and challenge your opponent to a game of 1960: the Making of the President.

OK - one card down, only about a hundred to go. My goal is to have Ultimate Twilight Struggle take exactly as long as the actual Cold War

Any card/game suggestions?

Shouldn't Wargames trigger a nice game of chess?

Or you could substitute Goduku for tic tac toe...

There are plenty of wargames covering the content of the War cards, particularly the Arab Israeli conflict. This should contribute significantly to you achieving your dream of a game lasting as long as the Cold War itself. I say this as a wargames myself Here is just one suggestion.

The Arab-Israeli Wars

Chernobyl = Power Grid

Terrorism = Hostage Negotiator

Star Wars = Star Wars: Rebellion

One small step / Advancing the spacer race track = Leaving Earth

Every war card should have their boardgame counterpart

The only winning move is not to play.

No, no, Terrorism is clearly Labyrinth: The War on Terror, 2001 - ?, and you play out the cards in that one the same way as in Ultimate Twilight Struggle, as Carl suggests for Junta and 13 Days (and I guess 1960: The Making of the President and 1989 Dawn of Freedom?)
