Subject: i want to try out the game - is Duelosaur island ok? rss

I recently found out about this game. The theme is fantastic, the style of pictures very unique and the whole package seems a profoundly fun idea. Which is a problem because i am normally into weird grimdark cyberpunk games.
I guess getting older blesses us with different perspective on many things ;D
Anyway , as it is not a game i would be typically buying and going all-in without any reservation, my question is:
would Duelosaur island (the cheapest 35 USD pledge) get me enought enjoyment? I play ONLY 2 player games and solitaire is a welcome addition.

I guess i will be missing the fluff of meeples, they can not be bought as an addon in addition to duelosaur island?

To rephrase: is Duelosaur island pledge a good deal for the beginner considering:
- the game mechanics
- the stretch goal stuff

Cheers
Martin

As nobody has a copy of Duelosaur it's going to be hard for anyone to judge.

Personally I'm going for the base game and expansion, and leaving out Duelosaur - even though most of our games are 2 player. My decision was based on a) I've read and watched lots of videos about Dinasaur Island, all of which have made me think I'd like it, where as there's not much to get a feel for how Duelosaur will play. b) I know I enjoy games which are 'blinged up' and those dino meeples are lovely - I'd feel sad not to have them, if I only had Duelosaur c)We have lots of multi-use card games, so I don't feel the need for another one.

hmm, interesting! Both Dinosaur and Duelosaur are described as X-treme Ediiton. Does not Duelosaur also come with "bling" in this case? ;D

Well it might well be deluxe-ified compared to the edition they sell at retail (I'm not sure how the two additions will vary), but no dino meeples as the cards themselves do the work of the dino meeples.

Hey there, as the co designer of the DI and Duelosaur solo modes I might be able to help. Duelosaur is a fantastic solo and 2 player game. It keeps everything which makes DI great but condenses it into a shorter game. It is easier to set up, plays much quicker and focuses on 2 player. The solo mode (6 different AI's) provide a great solo experience. Each one plays different and they vary in difficulty so it provided a good amount for replay value. I really love DI as well but for strictly 2 player, Duelosaur is amazing.

Thank you very much Tony! Congratulations on figuring out the Solitaire mode of the game! I am going to back the Duelosaur ASAP. And the rest will follow... in future ;D

To further muddy the waters, I will add that my wife and I play Dino Island a lot. I've played over 40 times at 2 players. It is a great 2 player game. That said, I am all in on this campaign for everything (I have the retail version of DI, but I want the x-treme edtion. Yes i can just buy the upgrade kit, but I want the x-treme box, OK? Yeah go ahead an judge me, i know.

DI is definetly great at 2 players. Actually DI is great 1 through 4 (soon to be 5). Duelosaur just cuts down on time for those people that don't have the space or time to break out DI. You really can't go wrong on either. I actually recommend both because while the theme and feel are the same, the strategies and how they play are very different.

Hi Tony! So the just-unlocked DI solo mode is a true AI rather than the current beat your own score solo? Hoping for s bit more info on it...

As a Duelosaur Island playtester, I am very happy with this game as a 2-player game. I haven't tried the 1-player rules though as I don't play 1-player too often any more.

There would be no use for the plastic dinos in this game other than decoration. It's all cards, dice, tokens.

Who let you out of the KS comments?! The solo mode is an actual AI, yeah. It has a sort of campaign element to it also where if you want you can progress from base DI through the expansion modules. It's fantastic how Tony was able to bring it all together.

I escaped from security - someone failed to employ the security specialists I guess!!! Thanks for the reply - it sounds great! Maybe a tease of that in a 12-hour update might help along a bit ... !!! ;-) ;-)

Ah man, Ian gets to reveal all the good stuff! Brian, Jon, and Ian had some great ideas which we were able to implement in the solo AI. I am really excited for everyone to see the final solo mode on this. I think both Duel and DI will be amazing solo games (off course I am just a little biased.) Oh, DI AI won't go easy on you either!

I recommend Duelosaur for your situation. I too will be playing 2 player only and have therefore backed only Duelosaur. With less setup/breakdown, less $$ and the fact it was specifically designed for 2 player makes it an easy decision for me.

Just gone in on this this morning as a late backer for DI + TL. It look an awesome game to play with the family and young kids can probably simplify the DI base game appropriately for a 5 year old. Didn’t go for Duelasaur As I don’t mind a bit of setup time and think the meeples will be a better hands on thing/interest for the for the kids.

Shame I can’t seem to comment in the campaign though as a late backer!

There are a couple duelosaur island playthrough videos going around right now. I believe most of them are even linked on the KS page. You could watch those, and see if it is the right game for you or not.
