Set up a small plastic toy treasure chest just like the volcano tile on one of the 12 inner squares on the board. Each player has a different spot for the chest.
This works just like how you pick up gold and crystals but if you manage to get all 4 adventurers on the location of the treasure chest at the same time gain 15 points, if you get 3 adventurers gain 12 points, 2 gain 8 points and 1 gain 5 points.
If you move 1 adventurer onto the treasure chest location you can either decide to move him from the chest location and take the 5 points or you can make him wait for the others so you gain more points. Once an adventurer moves from the treasure chest location you must collect it immediately and receive the points for how many adventurers were on the square.
Enjoy.

Slight rule addition: Gain an additional 10 points if you manage to get the treasure chest home to a temple with an adventurer.
If you have 2 or more adventurers on the treasure chest location, you must allocate one adventurer who will attempt to bring the treasure to his temple. If you manage to do so gain an additional 10 points.
An example: If you decide to just have the 1 adventurer collect the treasure chest, gain the 5 points and allocate the treasure chest to this adventurer, then gain an additional 10 points if you manage to get this adventurer to the temple.
Another example: you have 3 adventures waiting on the treasure chest location, the fourth adventurer finally arrives so you now have 4 meeples on the treasure chest location, immediately gain the 15 points and now you must allocate the chest to 1 adventurer who will attempt to take it all the way to his temple before the game ends. Gain 10 points if you do so.

Hopefully this makes sense. Let me know your thoughts! I feel this would add more tension and also eliminate the players who make the paths around the edges.
