I'm wondering which kind of hazard does the HazMat Suit protect against, in people's campaigns.

This is not a rules question. The rule is pretty clear. It's about how to make it worth.

In 1.0/1.1, the HMA was introduced in Pax Galacticum, where biohazards were real and dangerous.

However, in the missions so far in 2.0, the HazMat Suit seems less useful. Yes, it does protect a little against fire, and of course it's a hands-free EVA. Still, I'm not sure how to make that -3 difficulty on Athletics checks to avoid hazardous effects worth the -1 Move and mass 10.

So, what do you do? Does it protect against gas effects? Toxins? Or do you invent new hazards, like radiation leaks, airborne diseases, environmental poisons? Have you done something original or surprising that made it invaluable?

Yes, it protects against gas effects, toxins and any new stuff you throw at it including environmental effects on planets. (Cheap plug for Dirtside)!

Ok, good. Gas effects depend on failing an Ath vs 11 roll.

toxins

Only a few toxins depend on an Athletics check (Death, Kayo, Nervo, and Stun). So the HazMat Suit is useless against the others, isn't it?

Waiting for the Kickstarter...

Jeff didn't answer that one, but my gut feeling is no, the HazMat Suit does not protect against disintegration.

A disintegrator discharge is not a biohazard, or at least no more than an energy grenade detonation or a blaster shoot, IMHO.
