Is it true that Mage Knight the board game has been continually on the Hotness list since 2011? Any other games come even close to the amount of time Mage Knight has been on the list? I know The Castles of Burgundy is on the hotness list now, but I do not think it has been on the whole time since 2011. Is the Hotness list, and the amount of time a game stays on the list a reliable metric of how good a game is? Or is it a metric of how complicated a game is?

Hotness = page visits. Make of it as you will.

This. Basically, if a game has an active community or something that draws people to its page here, it might rise up the hotness. Mage Knight has pretty good content on its forums, which would cause people to be there often.

Sometimes all it takes is a really good photo to draw people to that game's page and things will climb the hotness. It is a rough indication of what people are looking at.

So, add a new file or fancy photo once a week and D100 dungeon could be on the hotness for 7 years?

I suspect at least half of Mage Knight’s page views are rules clarifications.

Yeah, hotness is not necessarily a good thing.

Yeah, hotness is not necessarily a good thing.

But if people are checking rules... Is that not a good thing? The people are playing the game, and they care enough to play it right rather than just make a call by the seat of the pants? So many people are playing it and many care enough to check the rules.

Or you could just have well-written rules instead.

Too true.

Have you played Mage Knight? Are the rules poorly written and/or laid out?

New edition is coming out so I suspect some added views are being factored in.

An index would have helped. I think the rules are there, it is just finding things. A friend of mine went to look up a rule only to find it in the walkthrough manual instead and he said it didn't make sense for it to be there versus the reference manual.

I don't know about 2011, but since 2015 the only game that's been on the Hotness more consistently is Terra Mystica (and only barely).

It's true that the Hotness isn't an automatic indication of quality--indeed, some games have gone viral because of how terrible they are--but yeah, unclear rules aren't going to singlehandedly keep a game in the Hotness for seven years either.

Whatever else one may say about WizKids or their rulebooks, they've been offering them as searchable pdfs for a real long time. I know some people don't like to look up rules on a computer, but I'll take Ctrl-F over an index any day.
