The Doctor closed his eyes and let out a soft sigh as the TARDIS landed. Where was he now? What would be required of him here? He had spent millennia answering those questions, only to be asked them again and again without end.

He stepped out of the TARDIS onto the soft green grass. Earth, then. Earth again. The humans were always getting into trouble. He sniffed the air -- by the pollution in the atmosphere and the rebuilding going on in the village ahead, the Doctor judged that he'd arrived a year or two after the end of World War II. Those funny humans! They'd run out of numbers before they ran out of wars.

However, this place seemed to be quiet now, and out of the way. Perhaps a chance to rest a while? Only one way to find out. The Doctor straightened his scarf, ran a hand through his slick hair, and started walking . . . .

Walking along, the Doctor sees an old woman arguing with a much younger one. He pays no mind until the older one flies into the air and starts shooting electricity from her hands at the young lady! It was without as second thought that the Doctor jumped in to defend the younger woman -- only later did he stop to ask why.

With a scream, the younger woman ran and hid behind a tree. With a few well-placed whacks from his cane, the Doctor swatted the old woman until she flew off over the roofs of the surrounding houses.

Looking around, the Doctor motioned for the younger woman to come out of hiding. "That Carrionite, why was she after you?" asked the Doctor, somewhat abruptly.

"I-I don't know. That's Lillith. She lives down the lane from me," said the woman. "What did you call her?"

"Carrionite. Source of your legends about witches and hags. Not to be messed with -- unless you have a big stick!" The Doctor smiled as he held up his cane. "She'll be back though. We need to leave. What is your name?"

"James. Louisa James"

"Well, Miss 'James, Louisa James,' you may call me the Doctor. Shall we?"

And with that, the Doctor found himself in the company of yet another helpless human.

Or so he thought.

Moving quickly from house to house, the Doctor and Louisa continue to scan the skies for Lillith, the Carrionite disguised as an elderly neighbor of Louisa's. "We should go to my aunt's house," said Louisa. "She lives on the other side of the village. We should be safe there."

"Lead the way," replied the Doctor.

However, they soon found an obstacle in their path: an open square in the center of town, with no obvious cover from the flying hag. "Run!" shouts the Doctor, pushing Louisa forcefully into the open. They both sprint across the square.

But not quickly enough. With a thud and a crash, the Doctor is pushed down from behind, pain shooting from the back of his head. Looking up, he sees Lillith hovering over him. "When we next meet, Time Lord," shrieks Lillith, "You will not find me as so easy prey!" With a cackle, Lillith flies off into the sky.

The Doctor feels the back of his head and finds a bald patch: Lillith tore out a handful of hair. "She'll use that to weaken me the next time we fight," muttered the Doctor. "Let's get to your aunt's. We need to regroup."

"Time Lord?" asked Louisa. "Are you a watchmaker or something?"

"Something," answered the Doctor as the two ran on.

Going through the village was slow work, especially since the pair were trying to stay under the eaves and overhangs of the houses, and ducking from alley to alley. The Doctor continued to glance toward the sky, hoping that Liliith would not make another sudden appearance.

As they made their way along, the Doctor suddenly halted. Stooping, he picked up something lying in the grass. Louisa saw that it was a silver disc, perhaps 10 centimeters across. The Doctor turned it over and Louisa saw writing on the other side: "Back to the Future, Part II".

"It's called a 'DVD', said the Doctor. "And you humans won't invent them for another 45 years or so. Your witchy friend is from the future, and if her taste in entertainment is any indication, she's trying to change history."

Suddenly, Lillith swooped down from the sky again! "And you won't interfere, Time Lord," she shouted. "I've weakened you already, and I'll take Miss Louisa here to make sure you stay away!" Grabbing Louisa around the waist, Lillith took off into the sky!

The Doctor's face hardened. He resolved to end this, and quickly. Running through a doorway marked "CONSTABLE", the Doctor saw a group of uniformed officers drinking tea. "You there, do-nothings! Do you know where a cackly old woman named Lillith lives?" Getting directions from the confused officers, the Doctor ran back out the door.

Bursting into Lillith's cottage, the Doctor sees Louisa tied to a chair, with another Carrionite preparing some sort of foul potion in a cauldron! "You ladies really like playing up the stereotype, don't you?" snorts the Doctor has he draws his cane.

Louisa is helpless to watch as the Doctor and the witch creature throw themselves at each other. The battle rages around the interior of the small cottage, but soon the Doctor is standing over the motionless body of his enemy. As the Doctor unties Louisa, it crumbles to ash. Kicking over the cauldron, the Doctor takes some of the wood from the fire and sets the cottage alight.

"This house acted as a tether for the Carrionites in this time," explains the Doctor. "Even though I didn't face Lillith here, she won't be able to remain in this temporal space without it here. It's finished - time is safe."

"With the Carrionites untethered from this time, soon everyone in the village will forget that they were ever here. They will be erased from the history of this place," the Doctor explained. Erased for everyone, except perhaps you, Ms. James. That is, if you would care to accompany me to see where they came from. I need to determine how they moved through time." The Doctor held out a glowing key to Louisa; why he wanted this helpless human to join him now even the Doctor couldn't say.

Louisa looked at the key. "Doctor, you are cruel -- almost as cruel as those witches. You are angry and afraid. But I don't think you were always so. I'll come with you, but I want your promise that you will seek to find a less violent means to deal with your troubles than you did today. Not everything should be solved with a stick." With just the slightest of hesitations, Louisa took the key from the Doctor's hand as he promised he would.

Together, they walked silently back to the TARDIS. The Doctor thought about whether he had just made an empty promise to this woman -- a woman who reminded him of all the others before who had came with him before and held him to a higher standard...

...but never made it home themselves.
