We've added a couple clear plastic cubes to the game. We set them on our starting card to remind us of which one it is, as the board can get a little hectic at times.

At the end of a turn, move the cube from the starting card to a spot near the round marker -- it also serves as a reminder to progress the round marker.

That's a neat idea! And yes it can if you have had a lot of draws; but remember the cards are designed to be stacked down the row, so if you place your starting card and the moved cards on the bottom of the rows you can easily find them. Although for the round marker that is something one does kind of need to be vigilant about, we've all forgotten to move it in games.

P.S. we didn't realize there were questions backing up here, if you join our discord we can get back to you a lot quicker.

We don't use the cubes so much any more...

What we've found more convenient/useful is to set the starting card in its area (Loyalists, Recruits, etc.) in a portrait orientation. Other cards retain their horizontal orientation. Once the turn is over, "tap" the starting card into a horizontal orientation.

I also like your "stack at the top, play at the bottom" suggestion, too!
